    1. Nadi Nadi Google both, if you don’t understand the reference, which is an old, old saying.

It denotes ‘enthusiasm’ and energy, possibly because of the tools that they reference being originally used as smithie tools by a blacksmith – the hammer to beat, the tongs to grip.

Blacksmiths endure, even though similar archaic roles such as thatchers, coopers, tallowmen and the like are close to extinction any more, but smithies do indeed still go at some of their tasks in a hammer and tong style – swinging and beating with power, energy and enthusiasm as they reshape metal.

These days, the saying ‘hammer and tongs’ usually has a negative connotation – it’s typically used to denote people arguing or having a bitter, angry conversation (nobody ever has a friendly conversation in a hammer and tongs style, for example). It’s also occasionally, but more rarely, used to refer to sexual activity – a couple or group going at it, hammer and tongs, which hardly needs any explanation.

However, in this particular context, it was used correctly – these political rivals indeed went at each other, hammer and tongs, attacking and criticizing each other with gusto. The swing of the smithie’s arm. The caustic lashing from a rival. Hammer and tongs.

      Nerd out.
