Port of Spain, Trinidad, October 28, 2012 – Roughly 40 broadcasters and presenters from 17 countries will participate in a workshop on Emergency and Disaster Management in Port of Spain, Trinidad on October 29 and 30.
The workshop is organized by the Commonwealth Broadcasting Association (CBA) and the Caribbean Broadcasting Union (CBU) to the to introduce current expertise and share best practices relating to the lead up, during and after an emergency or disaster for Caribbean broadcasters.
“We would like to encourage regional collaboration and set objectives for continued engagement,” said Adam Weatherhead, Project Manager with the CBA. “While we had planned the workshop long before Hurricane Sandy, it has provided a timely reminder of the importance of organised information sharing in the region.”
The workshop targets senior broadcasters throughout the Caribbean. Countries represented will be Antigua, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Cayman Islands, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, Montserrat, St. Kitts, Saint Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, and Trinidad & Tobago.
The workshop, which starts on Monday will see presentations from Patrick Cozier, Secretary General of the CBU, Barbara Jacobs-Small from Saint Lucia, Rose Willock from Montserrat, Emanuel Moolchan from Trinidad and Tobago, Russell Lewis from National Public Radio in Alabama and Anahi Iacucci from Internews (Washington).
It will be facilitated by Indi Mclymont-Lafayette, Country Coordinator (Jamaica Office), Panos Caribbean.
The workshop has also received support from other partners such as United Nations Education, Science and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), Commonwealth of Learning, Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency, Atlantic LNG and CCN-TV6.
