An often misunderstood concept:
Bar associations are private entities, open for membership to licensed attorneys and law school students. There are hundreds of them in the US and all over the world. Many are locally based and many are international where the interest is some facet of international law. Others are specific to substantive interests, i.e., tax law, litigation, criminal law etc.
All licenses to practice law are governed by the highest court in the states. The courts have special sections to govern the bar exam and licenses to practice. One can be a member of the bar and never join a bar association. But one cannot be a member of a bar association without being a licensed attorney or having a connection to the practice of law.
Courts govern the practice of law and all facets of discipline and professional ethics. Bar associations are professional groups which one may join if interested.
Separate operations and entities. Often confused by laymen.
