The tech community warned everyone, including our politicians, over two decades ago that broadband access was going to be a real problem in the future. Well, the future is here and the private telecoms and cable companies have completely failed to deliver universal broadband — despite government incentives paid _up front_ to these companies. Instead of a broadband enabled future, increasing numbers of people are cut off by their lack of broadband access. Community owned broadband, either municipal or cooperative based, could have solved this problem, but instead of promoting that socially responsible alternative the federal and state governments sided with the incumbent private providers and refused funding — or in the case of some states actually outlawed publicly owned networks. This is the bed you made for yourself, America. Now you’ve got to lie in it.
