Why Trump vetoed bipartisan defense spending bill

President Donald Trump vetoed the sweeping defense bill that both chambers of Congress recently passed by veto-proof majorities, setting up a possible veto override that would pit members of his own party against him.
Trump had previously threatened to veto the defense bill, known as the National Defense Authorization Act, because it doesn't include a repeal of Section 230, a law that shields internet companies from liability for what is posted on their websites by them or third parties.
The bill includes provisions to limit how much money Trump can move around for his border wall and another that would require the military to rename bases that were named after figures from the Confederacy.
"Unfortunately," the President wrote in his veto message to Congress, "the Act fails to include critical national security measures, includes provisions that fail to respect our veterans and our military's history, and contradicts efforts by my Administration to put America first in our national security and foreign policy actions. It is a 'gift' to China and Russia."
Trump's veto sparked an immediate rebuke from GOP Sen. Jim Inhofe, the chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, who said that the defense bill must become law.
"The NDAA has become law every year for 59 years straight because it's absolutely vital to our national security and our troops. This year must not be an exception. Our men and women who volunteer to wear the uniform shouldn't be denied what they need— ever," Inhofe tweeted.

    1. @Debbie unknown there is only one bill. you take it as one or not. you can’t vote separately for each one. so yea it’s one vote one bill.

    2. @Debbie unknown Nancy literally said on live television that she was delaying The stimulus because it was all politics!!

    3. @Greg R. My bad, that just sounded much like what I’ve heard from more right wing ro-Nancy Pelosi Dems.

I’m just sorta’ bummed out about some of the recent laws being passed and the changes to the internet in general, especially the fact that Google is going to start charging me money after Jan 1st for Google Photos if I exceed my quota (which I already have)

You don’t happen to know any alternative that I could use, do you? I need an image storing service that’s 1) Free 2) has no storage limits 3) can store high quality images.

    4. @MultiVixx you do understand that the Usa owes other countries money correct? You also know that allies cost money, correct? Especially in a time like this when Russia hack us! so clearly we aren’t the greatest if Russia can hack us so easily. Now is the right time to sweeten up our allies before we lose them. I agree it’s a little money but what would you rather? What about America, the whole world watches America and Being a leading nation comes with responsibility, like parents look after their children. I can see why we have that stereotype of being shellfish and ignorant. So you want the freedom to do whatever not follow cdc guidelines and mask wearing and complain about your freedom but then cry what about me. I live in NYC, and as a New York I was my tax money go to these backwards state to fix their roads and whatever, the same states that shot on NYC when we had high number. Sorry but I don’t agree with you. I do agree it’s little but something is better than nothing if it goes to greaten our country not just me. I’m for America, not just myself.

    1. @Pedro Manzorelli It’s Congresses JOB to read these Bills before voting. This is why we elect them and pay them generously.

    2. @Noneshere you mean it just needs the repulican ran Senate to sign off on it. That wont happen because there the ones who dont care if the american people are starving or losing there homes. They only care about making there pockets fatter.

    3. @wayne burkhart Yeah, Kevin was being very sarcastic. He’s talking about the coup that LBJ and Co. might have pulled on our country, by possibly whacking JFK.

And Trump and the GOP aren’t working for anything. I give the Dems at least some credit for having at least a shred of dignity.
I mean, you didn’t see Hillary and Pelosi go crazy in 2016 like how Trump is being now. I can’t even fathom how dangerous Trump’s behavior is right now, for our country’s security and *safety.*

    1. @BidenCheatedAndBrokeHisAnkle 123 “he gave us the vaccine ”
actually, Germany gave us the vaccine.

and pence can reject electors all he wants, it doesn’t matter in the least.

    2. Maybe but some of us need help right now…lost job no unemployment for me after the 26th of this month…savings is gone…need help like so many. Trump only cares about himself like all Republicans..my party for all of my life…they have changed….I will go independent now

    1. @Libby Some didn’t allow you either – you just decided to march in and set up camp on your own under the false claim that said countries had WMD’s…only after you created a disaster and realized they didn’t have any, were you asked to stick around to help clean things up…and it wasn’t the first or the last time.

    2. @James Biggar that’s cause they know better. Sure refugees when they apply and wait the legal way to come in, but illegal immigration on numbers should just walking in anywhere u want and not filing any paperwork . What would you call something that’s not suppose to be where it is?

    3. @Margaret Nicol sounds like they need to do more there also then. Let’s just do nothing and let them all in so they can get AMERICAN tax dollars they didn’t earn. There is quite abut coming across the boarder. I see you are a no border person. Which means I hope anyone can walk into your yard and live.

    1. Is your enemy my enemy? Alliances are difficult in an era when 20 years of your online presence can and will be used in a variety of ways to manipulate exactly WHO you consider the real enemy. I recall a time when speaking with Soviets – like via amateur radio – got you a visit from guys in black vans. Somehow 70+million Americans think they have more in common with a Yankee carpetbagger than they do with 80+ million OTHER Americans. Even when the Yankee openly supports and enables the Soviet psyops crippling our government…

    2. @《Electric Dragon》 Absolutely, politicians are terrible, but its the media that paints the pictures we see from both perspectives. Every little detail spun to fit the narrative coming from higher up, usually with childlike oversimplification, ignorance, and ridicule. Everyone is so quick to judge everyone else and they assume that they have it all figured out after hearing a brief (often satirical) overview, without ever truly knowing the nuance of the situation.

    1. @Boomer Remover Gosh dangit, if that isn’t the most American thing I’ve heard in the last 5 minutes. It brought freedom tears to my eyes 🗽

  1. 600$?! That can pay half of the rent for most places and maybe buy some groceries. Trump so doing the right thing, we don’t need more military spending, money going to stupid statues, DMCA laws, and other countries! Why, people are starving, struggling with health care and many more things and they think 600$ will fix it. Of course politicians don’t lose their jobs or miss paychecks because of the pandemic, we have almost 700 billion dollars going to Military every year they can use some of that to boost troops paychecks. This is disappointing that people are hating on trump for stopping this bill but it doesn’t help the people, all it did was allow a bunch of politicians to add a bunch of laws and slap on the title “Relief Bill” we don’t need women’s museums, tax cuts for race tracks, space force spending, statue removals, and money for foreign aid, we need help for the American people and Trump is actually doing it I am not a fan of him but he is doing the right thing on this.

    1. You do realize the bill this newsclip is talking about (the NDAA) and the bill you’re talking about (coronavirus relief attached to the omnibus spending bill) are two different pieces of legislation, right?

    2. @Jeremy Morley I understand that, but I still think trump was right to stop it & demand more money for Americans & trim the fat regardless! We all apparently have piss poor representation in Congress & we’re all a little sick of it…especially while we’re all sick of covid!!!

    3. @Jeremy Morley The NDAA is a part of the omnibus spending bill. An omnibus spending bill is when they put bunch of different bills all into one bill to require one vote and make things faster. Also this newsclip talked about both.

    1. You guys are wrong. OP is right. It’s called an an omnibus spending bill. They put together a bunch of different bills all into one bill to require one vote and make things faster. Here it is straight from the government website “WASHINGTON — House Appropriations Committee Chairwoman Nita M. Lowey (D-NY) today released the text of an omnibus spending bill consisting of all 12 fiscal year 2021 appropriations bills, coronavirus relief, and authorizations. The legislation, a product of bipartisan, bicameral negotiations, is expected to be considered in the House today.” So as you can see, the bill contains 12 different bills.
      https://appropriations.house.gov/news/press-releases/house-democrats-file-omnibus-spending-bill

    2. @Roger Out It all requires one vote so it’s not completely separate.. did you think it required a vote for each division of the omnibus?

    3. @Nameless – No, we’re not wrong. Many news articles are still speculating about whether or not he’ll outright veto the stimulus bill, pocket veto it by simply refusing to sign it (has he has so far done), or give in and just sign the thing. Here’s one from CNN literally discussing the defense bill being vetoed and speculating on the stimulus bill’s future: https://www.cnn.com/2020/12/23/politics/trump-ndaa-veto/index.html

They’re separate bills. Hell, the “defense spending bill” they’re talking about here is a 740 billion dollar expenditure, while the “stimulus bill” is a 900 billion dollar one. They’re not the same thing, and vetoing this defense bill doesn’t impact the stimulus bill in any way at all.

  2. “Chaotic” because he didn’t want to send all that money overseas? Why do these bills always get bogged down with secret side deals? If it was as basic as giving more money to soldiers and reinforcing our defenses it would’ve been signed and passed. All of this secretive nonsense is the problem

    1. @Toby’s Gaming World Chris Jones is right. Just because video clips of the President speaking appeared on CNN doesn’t mean the President didn’t say the words. Those speeches were also covered on other networks AND ARE VIDEO OF THE PRESIDENT TELLING ALL OF US WHY HE VETOED THE BILL. Are you trolling, or are you actually this dumb?

    2. That’s the basis of politics: “I want this and that………..if yu give me this, I’ll give you that”. Contrary to what McConnell believes, politics isn’t about “give me what I want, but I won’t give you any of the things that you want”

    3. “Chaotic” because the way major legislation works, the details get agreed to in advance with the Majority and Minority leaders of both houses and the President. AFTER that meeting, Trump threatened to veto if the bill didn’t repeal another law totally unrelated to the NDA. Then he did veto it. Basically, the President pulled the rug out from under Congress so he could hold military funding hostage, including pay and benefits, to essentially end all social media by making all social media platforms legally accountable for everything posted. Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, and all the others would have to shut down and would likely not come back online. Imagine YouTube being responsible for everything in every video EVER posted. Repealing 230 is a HORRIBLE idea. Holding our national defense hostage to do it is an even worse idea.

    4. NO!
Donald Trump SAID his 2020 NDAA veto was over
      Section 230, Communications Decency Act’s,
legal protections for social media companies ,
all because twitter censored his lies

  3. 600 dollars for struggling Americans when BILLIONS are being given to liars, criminals and crooks in Washington DC! This is a joke! There’s going to be mass unrest and riots!

  4. It was a horrible bill full of wasteful spending and gave billions to foreign nations instead of to the American business owner and worker

    1. All bills are like this, but thanks for showing up to spew nonsense in defense of the worst POTUS of all time.

    2. @ab1923 Have you accepted Jesus Christ and been baptized in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit? If you have not, then I implore you do so. Do it now. Don’t waste time. Please give this some thought.

  5. He can’t think I’d be taught me open this mouth crap comes out he doesn’t want that internet thing going on because it would affect him directly

  6. A bill should automatically be rejected if those voting on it do not know what’s in it.
SOLUTION. A quiz must be created and administered to each person who votes on it. The quiz tests if they actually know what is in the bill, and works as a signature that they have read the bill.
If they do not score at least an 80%, they are not allowed to vote on the bill, OR if the super majority cannot score at least an 80%, then the bill is rejected.

Other creative ways would be to randomly form teams, and compete is a kind of team trivia on the bill.

  7. The bill was absolute garbage just like the “relief” bill. Everyone from both parties that signed it should be voted out. Primary out the people who are in “your” party and let’s wash out Congress with a firehose.

    1. @Joseph Davidson – the list is too big of who should be voted out. You could start with a list of the few people with integrity that are allowed to stay – Nunes, Jordan, Gaetz, Brooks, Manchin, Cruz, Paul, Hawley, Cawthorn, Greene, Gohmert, Gooden, Biggs, Blackburn, etc.

    2. @M S – I don’t really trust anything I see or hear unless I read it straight from the source. People should try it.

  8. What do giving millions to “horse racing integrity ” ” adjustment of status of Liberian nationals ” have to do with defense??? read the bill it’s almost 6,000 pages.

    1. i got to page 4k something before i was sickened by some of the pork in there I would rather give 1.6 million to struggling nations then give 1.3 million for execs to be able to write off a 3 martini lunch. at least the former has investments in USA safety and humanitarian reasons the later is what you should be really mad about.

    2. Only the rich own race horses & money to these countries is about supporting the elite classes in those countries who want to prop up dictators who will make $$$ for those elites while subjugating the middle & poorer classes and at the same time stealing those countries natural resources. Corporate interests for the wealthy. It’s a stimulus for them only.

  9. Trump is a vindictative person, he’s just started, get ready for more. Hope he doesn’t has the nuclear code, since Biden is the official President-Elect !
