    1. Might not want to get your law from a TV show. Many stores already don’t accept 50s even. It’s a private business, they aren’t forced to sell you anything.

    2. @Tony N Private businesses are free to do some thing but not others.
They are free to deny your legal tender but not free to remain open when Walmart is for some reason. They are free to deny you service for not wearing a mask but not free to not bake certain cakes for moral degenerates.
      Understand?

    1. Legal tender can’t really be refused – but service sure can and they absolutely reserve that right. SO if you push the issue they can just refuse to service you. It’s that simple.

    2. John I was always under that impression as well but recently (pre covid) I went to renew my passport and was shocked to learn they do not accept cash at all. That is the government.

    1. @Machine Algorithm Alpha Real simple…You are right ..I cant refuse to accept real money… If you would like to make a big deal about it, I can call the cops and make you wait while I make sure it is real or I can just throw you off my property.. That is also legal.

    2. @Bob DeVreeze sure. You could also just refuse to sell anything to me, period. You just can’t demand that I not pay with Canadian currency in any form.

  1. printing photo of the some one spying on Canada money .. is large money is hard to keep is not safe is risky

  2. Since the denominations are all designed the same – it seems – then this weakness is in the 5,10,20 and 50 as well. What a subtle way to try to lessen the acceptance of cash as payment, when everything is suspect.

  3. Time to go back to gold and silver , get rid of fiat debt currency and bring back real money , gold and silver cannot be counterfeited

    1. It’s not just impractical to carry, it’s not possible any longer to covert an entire country’s fiat currency back to hard currency, especially into gold.
Most of the gold that was in circulation over the past 80 years has been utilized in ways that make it nigh impossible to extract the gold for making bullion. Computers, for instance, and computer cables/components contain a extraordinary amount of the gold that was once barred up as hard currency.

One of the main reasons why gold has climbed in price is because the supply has been made illiquid by its integration into materiel in society.

    1. Yes, and no. A retailer does reserve the right to refuse service. This is the card they play. This is why they also put up signage clearly indicating that no $100 bills will be accepted. If you try to push the issue, though they can’t refuse the currency they CAN and will refuse the service entirely.

So you’re not wrong, but you’re not right either.

There’s ways to use loopholes if you’re smsrt enough.

For me, I know that if I have a $100 bill that I got from the bank and it gets refused – I either use a different denomination or I shop elsewhere. It’s that simple. I’m not gonna force them to take my money and risk them refusing my service entirely.

    2. @BigDaddyJinx well there alot of truth of what you say but now it’s become a human rights issue
(Homeless, color, creed) being denied to eat (survive) as I got a case on the go but it’s all got to do with a cashless society
      Brother cris ➕

  4. too much cocaine residue from rolling the hundred up and then using it as a straw to snort the coke, the don’t want to get busted for drugs.

  5. but but… they said the new plastic note were extremely secure!??!?

also wtf, one time the bank ATM gave me a 30yo 20$ bill. the one with the little hologram square in the corner. i had to do like 5 stores until somebody took it.

  6. If someone comes in and buys $ 20 dollars worth and you have to give $80 change and your float is only $30… Yeh it gets irksome for both parties.

  7. This is a push to go digital cash only. The problem is many Canadians don’t have or can’t get a bank account to have digital money deposited to. They rely on Cheque Cashing Stores to process their cheques and they hand out $100 dollar bills. These merchants are shooting themselves in the foot over a couple hundred dollars when they claim more in loses then most actually have come tax time.

Then there are those who prefer not to have all their purchases tracked.

    1. Even if you do have a bank account, that doesn’t mitigate the fact that it requires putting a lot of (historically undeserved) trust in the institution, not to mention making it harder to handle emergencies. 😕 I smell a new run on the banks à la 1929 coming in the near future…

  8. This is all getting too familiar and i doubt it’s a coincidence. This is what it feels like living in Hong Kong and dealing with losing democracy.

  9. I’m fairly certain since it’s legal tender it’s illegal to not take any currency made and authorized in Canada. It’s called checking the bill and being educated enough to detect .

  10. Lovely, so if you wanted to keep some cash on hand for emergencies, you better make sure it’s a giant stack of $5’s… 😒
