The GOP infighting reached a turning point after Republicans ousted Congresswoman Liz Cheney from her leadership position. To some, the internal conflicts are drawing comparisons to the demise of the Whig Party in the early 1850s. Allan Lichtman, Distinguished Professor of History at American University joins NBC’s Joshua Johnson to discuss what the current Republican Party could learn from the mistakes of the Whig Party.

Now the Republican Party is the orange party….. The orange Teletubby party that is! Lol
@Arent blacks lovely you shouldn’t be reading other people’s emails
@Bill Rodriguez
Who cares about Hillary gramps.
I certainly don’t dummy.
@mike briganti
What was the last grade you successfully completed gramps? 🙈
@Bill Rodriguez
You failed Trailer Park High didn’t you gramps. 😜
@mike briganti Have a cookie.
The GQP is the Russian Roulette party with a fully loaded gun.
@Blue Patriot Pelosi and Schumer orchestrated Jan 6, 2021. Just like they orchestrated Covid.
@humbugs100 But…but…Hillary. But…but…Obama.
Traitor tRump lost and is going to jail. Enjoy that truth.
GOP party are the Russians.
@Arent blacks lovely It was on trump’s watch , in which, as was profoundly proven, he failed miserably because of his lies and incompetence, costing thousands of avoidable deaths.
Millions of them actually.
“…(Trumpian) GOP Infighting” reminds us, yet again, that “Jan621” Insurrectionist DJT is “utterly incompetent” as per the words of both his own Federal Judge elder-sister Maryanne Trump Barry and his own Clinical Psychologist niece Dr. Mary Trump. May “Imp2POTUS45” always hear “You’re fired” via the unwavering reality of election results that reject him who is the cause of “Mourning In America.”
Can you tell me the exact words Trump said to incite an “Insurrection”? .. I’ll be waiting
@Scahoni , I am simply wonderfully hungry and hope you, Scahoni, and others reading my comment at the top, also have a healthy appetite too. So how are you ?
@Scahoni, your not being able to reply appropriately over the past 31 minutes since being greeted here means, Scahoni, you’re “Stat COVID-19 Test” **positive** indicating that it’s possible you’re unwittingly contagious (i.e. pre-symptomatic) needing to call your doctor and to self-quarantine per CDC guidelines.
@Scahoni It started way back with the first lie, if I’m not elected it’s fraud.
They need to stop threatening and just do it maybe it would show the new party has some spine but they all just play games
💯👍
Cleave, baby, cleave!
Clint Jansen
I agree. We heard all of this BS for 4 years from the Democrats. They :won” and still make Trump’s and 74 million voters claims front page news LOL Why? Unless Trump is right.
The words ‘Future’ and ‘GQP’ should not be used in the same sentence, unless you intend to crack a joke.
@Gwendolyn Williams Just look at what they have done to America’s cities…
Same with the democraps
The Democrats are not full of crap.
Ganiscol
let’s revisit here in 2022 November and see who the joke is.
How many republicans do you use to screw in a light bulb ? …… None , cause they all try screwing the light socket !
The very fact that 70 percent of Republicans still believe the lie that Trump won the election shows a complete lack of cognitive thinking in a large portion of the American public.
@Russell Fine Arts you may be right. I do not get deep into research because i just don’t trust polls unless i am doing the poll itself. But they are a minority and they also are going to lose thousands and possibly millions in 2022. I have said and maintain that half of the republicans are good, decent, and moral people and i think all the coverage by the media is focused on the worst, being trumpians. J am a firm bed liever that this incarnation of the GOP is doomed. That half of the decent gop knows exactly why thier parents and grandparents fought against Facism in WW2. trump people however are not worth spit
@DAVID LEAMAN bingo my friend!!
@Wesley Hitchcock I totally agree! I was a Republican for ~15 years (when I first registered to vote) and at that time, we had roughly the same numbers of voters as Dems but times have drastically changed over the past 20 years since I left the party as the Repub party has repeatedly embraced lies, hate and conspiracy theories and have quickly declined in numbers. I agree, about 1/2 of Repubs are good and will gradually leave the party over the coming ~20 years and the other half will go down like the Federalist and Wig political parties and fade away. My hope is ALL Americans register Independent, vote progressive for average American policies, and we eliminate the electoral college, all money in politics, impose term limits on Congress and the Senate and allow everyone who wants to run for pres., to do so, without the money and corruption. Good things to work for.
@T. R. Campbell Ah yes, the ole “measure of success” moniker. Yes, his way of doing things was outside of the political norm. People felt electing a “business man” is what this country needed to boost an already recovering economy. (I still can’t figure out how a “successful business man” can have so many failures, t***p University, steaks, water, liquors and of all things, a casino, just to name a few.)
True his methods are unorthodox, which made him an outsider, but he never grasped the political protocols (bureaucracy) that makes government a functional body.
His incompetence towards a functioning government allowed an already established political class to become even more corrupt, both inside and out of his administration. They become emboldened by his willingness to turn a blind eye to their own endeavors.
I do agree with you that the behaviors of Rep Waters and House Speaker Pelosi were a bit childish in showing their own contempt for him and should’ve been more professional. You mentioned the legitimacy of his presidency as being questioned from the beginning. That may stem from the possibility of foreign interference in the 2016 election. Though there are no solid conclusions, because those that may have been involved were blocked from answering questions by those conducting the investigation, by the t***p administration.
As for the Paris Accord, his withdrawal was based on his refusal to believe that emissions from fossil fuels could be causing a warming of the planet that both you and I live upon.
His attempted withdrawal from Europe was designed to put U.S. foreign policy at disadvantage in dealing with an increasingly belligerent Putin. And can you believe that his friend, Kim Jong-un can be trusted NOT to reclaim South Korea?
There is one more topic that you have not brought up in any of your comments, and that is his response to the Covid-19 crisis.
You’ve brought up how he’s copied a tax plan by OUR ICONIC J.F.K. and touched on foreign policy, but no where do you mention his performance in dealing with the pandemic.
He will be forever linked to over 550,000 deaths because of how he failed to embrace the concept of a functional government.
Thank you for this evening of civil conversation. Good night 😴
Thinkin’s hard.
Why bother when someone else will do it fer ya?
The GOP has abandoned patriotism and embraced fascism.
Well it’s evident that the political extremism has definitely trickled down to the people. Is anyone capable of independent thought? Can you not view your political party of choice objectively and admit to their hypocrisy?
@Alex Hamilton Tell me the Republicans weren’t already doing that?
@Louis Tully Stop spewing nonsense. Can’t you see these are far too full of common sense thinking rather than bend the knee to your know nothing party. Just go somewhere and sit down and read your Dr. Sues books.
@Louis Tully Mussolini never said that. He DID however, in his official doctrine, lay out this definiton
“Granted that the 19th century was the century of socialism, liberalism, democracy, this does not mean that the 20th century must also be the century of socialism, liberalism, democracy. Political doctrines pass; nations remain. We are free to believe that this is the century of authority, a century tending to the ‘right’, a Fascist century. If the 19th century were the century of the individual (liberalism implies individualism) we are free to believe that this is the ‘collective’ century, and therefore the century of the State.
The Fascist conception of the State is all-embracing; outside of it no human or spiritual values can exist, much less have value. Thus understood, Fascism is totalitarian, and the Fascist State – a synthesis and a unit inclusive of all values – interprets, develops, and potentiates the whole life of a people.
Fascism is a religious conception in which man is seen in his immanent relationship with a superior law and with an objective Will that transcends the particular individual and raises him to conscious membership of a spiritual society. Whoever has seen in the religious politics of the Fascist regime nothing but mere opportunism has not understood that Fascism besides being a system of government is also, and above all, a system of thought.”
He defines it, as it was also used in Fascist Spain and Germany, as a rejection of socialism and liberalism (which I though those dang ole DEMONRATS were?!) and a embracing of collective strength thru a worship of God, Country, and Race. He also demarked it very clearly as a far-right ideology and a rejection of the left. Facts don’t care about your feelings snowflake.
They denigrate “antifa”.
If you are not anti fascism, WTF are you then, pro fascism?
It’s the INF party- ‘It’s Not Fair’. Basically kindergarten.
boaty msboatface
as opposed to the “STOOP” party? “Screw Themselves Out Of Power” Basically typical Leftest Democrat LOL
There is no GOP infighting.
Take note, everyone. This guy, Alan Lichtman accurately predicted 2016 and 2020 Presidential Election without the aid of poll numbers.
He did. He predicted Trump would win in 2016. Trump gave him an award because left wing media was definitely inaccurate on polling. However, he was on FOX News and said that Trump would lose 2020 based on his theory of questions and Trump supporters called him a fraud. This dude has done a more accurate job in Predicting presidential wins than any media outlet. I can’t wait to hear his prediction 2024.
@jadavision I remember seeing him on Faux Noise before the 2020 election. The hosts seemed shocked when he said Trump would lose.
Kaizer2001
Take note, This Guy, Donald Trump accurately predicted the 2021 Democrat party meltdown if they were declared the winners of 2020. Without poll numbers LOL
Using his seven keys to winning the White House, he has accurately predicted the winner since 1984. Pretty amazing guy.
@Alex Hamilton Your delusions would be cute if your idiotic comrades weren’t so scary.
Cheney will have the last laugh once Chump is in the ground in 2022 due to complications from his severe Covid-19.
Wouldn’t that be karma, after he played the pandemic down
@Lisa Blackmore That would be the giant hand of god coming through the clouds over the American people… and then fist bumping them to say “Sorry about that, I fixed it”.
Are you really that stupid??
So, the current D vs. R system came from a fractioning of the Whig party when they wouldn’t admit the truth. Wow. It’s all just a big slowdown to keep itself alive.
I would say the D’s are a faction from the Democratic-Republicans. it’s the expansive gov’t part of it. Which was the more progressive part of the party.
They’ve chosen to be a brand instead of a party of policies. It’s about culture wars and division.
@mike briganti BiDEN, like DEMocrats
@J C Your lack of argument is astounding.
@Arent blacks lovely Please tell us ONE communist policy they’re pushing. Just one.
@Marc Bensen Lack of argument? Why is that astounding. Its easy to pull apart your media claims. Just like they quoted Trump “all mexicans are criminals and rapists” when that’s not what he said. Yes I still remember that far back.
@Scahoni Apparently the reprobatelicans are the party of poor spelling.
The GOP IS “the know nothing party”….🤷♀️
You must have lost your ball in those high weed’s, go find it.
@J C that’s not really true. When has a Democratic President taken your guns away? And if you’re talking about Gun Control? Do you really want every American to have legal access to guns? Most Americans should and do have access to purchase guns. Gun control legislation is about trying to keep guns out of the hands of folk who intend to harm either themselves or others. Gun control laws are about responsible gun ownership. They are not about taking our guns away.
@humbugs100 troll
You clearly don’t know anything.
@leslie barwick None of those are my arguments. Dems don’t have enough credibility to do anything that infringes upon the 2nd amendment. And if you don’t think its about taking guns remember what that guy on the CNN Town Hall said after the Parkland shooting(all semi-auto’s banned which includes pistols). Wondering why you’re on a sock puppet account, do you just leave comments to try and annoy people?
Washington DC is a giant day care.
Especially with lobbyists running the show.
Amen!
I’m an independent voter and I concur, we don’t buy the big lie.
@Drought Tolerant 😂😂😂😂😂😂
The Republican Party has become an ouroboros. We are witnessing the beginning of the end. It will split. It’s only a matter of time.
@agf1700 getting rid of the cabal is a good thing.
I would call it the 2nd version of the lost cause. tbh
@Drought Tolerant Troll or … ? Wait, you do realize it’s already MAY 2021, right?! Not Jan. 6, not Jan. 20, not Mar. 4 (or whatever other date on which your Q “truth” is to be revealed). There’s patience and then there’s insanity.
There are so many of us in this country that couldn’t even pass a simple mental health test question, like….
Who is the president ?
Trump won
No, Trump lost in a fair election.
@Scahoni it’s like you people enjoy being wrong and looking so dumb/detached from reality. You got conned by A KNOWN Conman. Just accept it and move on please
From the time Trump joined that party it was like sitting on the Titanic…
Yes but when are the leftiest going to start holding their own party accountable as well? Tea Party and Trump had no problem calling the GOP out. But maybe the left won’t because deep down they have a far left “woke” or supposed utopia agenda.
Remember Colbert made the joke about W in Iraq not being like the Titanic, but like the Hindenburg? The GOP has been going down the crazy road for a while, like decades
@Chris Martin Yeah in terms of policy the neo-cons sucked. In terms of ideology, strong borders, guns, and some other policy they are strong. But I think they only piggy backed on conservative values to get their globalist agenda through. Now its the Democrats doing similar things and I’d be surprised if they don’t get us into another war.
Democrats were the party for slavery and high taxes . And there were Rinos back then as well. Biden did not win. It’s disturbing to see that people like what Biden has done in less than 4 months. Useful idiots.
@Melanie they like it because he’s helping the average american and not giving the ultra rich a free 2 trillion dollar tax cut. And not embarrassing us infront of the world and spreading stupid lies literally everyday like Trump did. Trump was a complete disaster and everyone in the world besides you Trump cult know it.
That last bit really is key. They’re done with democracy. They’re done appealing to the “the people.” In many cases, “the people” are the enemy. They even demonize California and New York with phrases like “tyranny of the majority.” At this point, it’s all about “how do we cut out the people that disagree with us?”
The former guy would be a perfect leader of the “Know nothing” party.
“I’ve got the best cluelessness, there’s never been anything like it.”
There is no GOP infighting. These people are lying to you.
In the past we had the “Whig” party, now we have the “Rig” party, run by an international criminal.
