Which Voters Are Buying The ‘Medicare For All’ Idea? | Velshi & Ruhle | MSNBC

    1. @Jeffrey Meade And the GOP has done anything to fix it other then breaking it again? And they had how many years to come up with something better?

    2. @Jeffrey Meade I bet you are one of the many Republicans that say “I hate ObamaCare, but don’t touch my ACA!”

      Dumb bugger.

    3. @Jeffrey Meade Obamacare is the polar opposite of single payer, because Obamacare leaves the insurance co’s in charge. Leaving insurance co.s in charge is just plain insane. A health insurance co’s primary goal is not health care, As with every “for profit” corporation its primary goal and reason for existence is maximizing profits for it’s shareholders. Profits are maximized by avoiding anyone with health issues, by denying claims, by fine print plans that don’t cover what buyers think is covered, and by the highest possible premiums, co-payments, and deductibles.

  1. Tell me again how many major countries have universal healthcare. It’s embarrassing and insulting that we’re still debating this in this country.

    1. @DOCTOR LOGIC Trump running the government like a business? Yeah, like one of the 6 (count ’em, 6) businesses that he started and ran into bankruptcy. That is in spite of the $400 million he got from his daddy. Then he made his money by selling the “Trump” name to other developments (not his own) and by scam’s like Trump University, that the courts found was nothing but a “bait and switch” scam. If this were the Old West, Trump would be the snake oil salesman selling “Dr. Trump’s Miracle Cure All Elixir” off the back of a covered wagon, and you would be one of the local rubes lining up to fork over your money.

    2. @DOCTOR LOGIC Chances are slim and none that you will take this advice, but here it is anyway. First, learn more about Bernie Sanders. Watch the 9 minute independent non-partisan documentary “Who is Bernie Sanders”, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LOnN3GSRUPQ covers his origins, career, and policies. Next, widen your understanding by watching some progressive channels, great examples being The Humanist Report, and Secular Talk. Google each one, and select some of their videos on topics that are of particular interest to you. You will find more factual information and insight that you will get on Fox, or even CNN, MSNBC, or other mainstream media.

    3. UNLIKE OUR LAST PRESIDENT WHO DID NOTHING BEFORE BEING THE PRESIDENT BUT STAND ON THE CORNER. TRUMP FAILED AND WAS ABLE TO COME BACK IN MANY BUSINESSES. THAT’S GOOD IN MY WORLD. THE TRUE SNAKE OIL SALESMEN ARE THESE SANDERS AND WARREN THAT’S HANDING OUT FREE STUFF WITH NO WAY OF PAYING FOR THEM THERE IS SOME FUNNY STUFF COMING OUT OF WARREN AND SANDERS.

    4. @DOCTOR LOGIC Tuition free public colleges? More than paid for via Sanders proposed small stock transfer tax on Wall Street speculation.
Single payer health care? Costs LESS than the present hc system.
Strengthening Social Security? Accomplished by removing the high income cap on contributions.
Other cost saving and revenue generating measures include:
      – eliminating the tax loopholes like offshore tax havens and “carried interest” (that Trump denounced and promised to eliminate but didn’t) that let corporations and billionaires evade taxes and pay a lower effective tax rate than ordinary middle class workers pay
      – raising the top marginal tax rate to 52% on that portion of income over $10M
      – ending taxpayer subsidies to profitable corporations, like those in the sugar, corn, and oil and gas industries.
      – reforming the justice system, and moving away from private “for profit” prisons, so that the US doesn’t continue to have the highest incarceration rate and the highest per capita incarcerated population in the world (3% of the worlds population but 24% of the worlds incarcerated population)
      – ending the practice of granting multi-trillion dollars of appropriations to the military-industrial complex WITHOUT ANY AUDITS

    5. Did you ask Trump how he was going to pay for his tax cuts? The Trump/GOP tax bill exploded the national debt and deficits and put wealth inequality on steroids to give tiny temporary middle class tax cuts and massive permanent tax cuts for billionaires (like Trump), and large profitable corporations (like Trump’s). 83% of the tax cuts go to billionaires and large profitable corporations.

The Fiscal Times: “The GOP Tax Bill Will Add $1.8 Trillion to the National Debt: CBO”, http://www.thefiscaltimes.com/2018/01/03/GOP-Tax-Bill-Will-Add-18-Trillion-National-Debt-CBO

Obama cut the annual deficits to $600B. Now, under Trump:, “Deficit Projected to Top $1 Trillion Starting Next Year https://www.wsj.com/articles/deficit-projected-to-top-1-trillion-starting-next-year-1531950742

WASHINGTON (Reuters): “ The massive tax cuts signed into law in December, which Republicans said would pay for themselves, will balloon the U.S. deficit in years ahead, the Congressional Budget Office said on Monday… https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-fiscal-deficit/republican-tax-cuts-to-fuel-historic-u-s-deficits-cbo-idUSKBN1HG2RW

And now the Trump/GOP proposed budget makes massive cuts to Medicare and Medicaid.

  2. Employer supplied health insurance forces people into economic servitude, that’s why conservatives like it so much.

    1. It does makes becoming self employed and starting your own business very difficult as you cannot negotiate a bulk discount especially if you have any kind of health problems.
This is bad for the economy in the long run as many new companies start out small operations as not everyone has rich parents and connections to get a couple of hundred million dollars of VC funding to start up big.

    2. @Dean Single payer, contrary to the Republican propaganda, is NOT “government controlled health care” nor “socialized medicine”, nor “government takeover of health care”, nor government run health care”. It’s just a far more administratively streamlined and cost effective hc FINANCING system. You just see your doctor, get whatever treatment the doc prescribes, and the single payer administration pays for it. It doesn’t interfere with you or your doctor. It just spreads the costs and contributions out over the largest possible risk pool – the entire population.

Doctors, clinics, are still private and compete for customers and strive for efficiency in order to reduce their costs and increase their profits.

Under single payer the private insurance companies still do a thriving business, offering supplemental insurance for things that may not be covered under single payer, like a private room if you are hospitalized.

    1. @Web Grep Why even bother making the effort to try to convince anyone you’re right about MFA, using cringey bad grammar and a racial slur (an old tired-out one, at that)? Like where do you think you are? This isn’t a FOX News upload, you know.

    1. Sorry to burst your bubble, but no humans or other animals have “souls.” Did you mean you remember when Republicans had consciences? or decency? or integrity?

    2. As though one of you Democrat commies actually believes in “souls.” That is sacrilege to your socialist masters.

  3. Do “most Americans like their [health] insurance”?? I sure don’t. It’s better than nothing but you always have conditions and restrictions and have to worry about weather they’re going to pay for something if you actually get sick.

    1. @Alan G. SENIORS ON MEDICARE RIGHT NOW HAVE TO PAY A PREMIUM, DEDUCTIBLE, 20% OF THE PRICE CONTROL COST, PLUS PAY FOR A DRUG PLAN. PLUS MEDICARE ONLY PAY FOR X NUMBER OF DAYS FOR HOSPITAL CARE. WHAT YOU THINK MEDICARE IS FREE FOR SENIORS? THEY WORK AND PAY INTO IT ALL THEIR LIFE TO GET IT AT 65 Y.O.

    2. Which is exactly the same problems with Government funded healthcare. Unfortunately, there’s no choice and waiting lines too.

    3. They will after they’s been on Government health care for a while. I had government heathcare, and it sucked… love private health insurance.

  4. *I can answer the question in this video right now:* all of the current polling data, from all over the country, indicates that roughly 70% of Americans approve of Medicare For All. _Period._ End of debate. MSNBC, CNN and Fox all accept an _enormous_ amount of advertising from the insurance and the drug companies. They are being forced to say this crap… so don’t listen.

    1. 70% is just a blatant lie and you probably know that. This is not complicated people, who benefits the most from Medicaid for all….the corporations. Currently 160 million+ Americans have their health insurance provided from their employer(full or in part). For years Lizzy Warren has attacked Walmart(and she was 100% spot on) for benefiting from low wage workers with greater profits while not providing them health coverage and sticking the tax payers with the bill, now she wants to implement that system nation wide. The corporations would LOVE to have that cost of 160 million insurance policies taken off of them and put on the tax payers dime.

    2. @benny pitt I THINK YOU ARE RIGHT. THE CORPORATION WOULD GET RID OF A BIG BURDEN ON THEM. JUST PAY SOME MONEY TO THE GOVERNMENT, NOW IT’S BERNIE AND WARREN’S PROBLEM OR BETTER THE TAXPAYER’S PROBLEM.

  5. Which? Any sensible ones, including many conservatives. 70% of Americans are for Medicare for All. If a candidate does not offer it, they aren’t worth voting for.

    1. @Holstorr Sceadus Not if you “opted out”, you didn’t. Now get off my road. The rest of us have places to be.

    2. @Ryan Syropiatko I don’t care about the economy or at least not the government’s control of it. I only need my government to protect voluntary consent. The rest individuals can decide for themselves. You want to start a commune then got for it with whomever wants to join you. You want to trade your labor freely then do so. Do what you want. It’s what I do. 93/93

  6. “Most Americans like their current insurance.” YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME. Most of American banrupties are by families who had “good” health insurance.

    1. @Dean I’ve lived years in the U.S., have family and friends in the US., and have lived more than half a century in Canada in 5 cities and 3 provinces. Single payer wins hands down! No contest!

      BENEFITS OF SINGLE PAYER

      1. covers everyone
      2. costs far less per capita, but it’s free at point of use so no one is deterred from getting hc they need when they need it
      3. Insurance companies can’t drop you (because you don’t even have to deal with insurance companies).
      4. you can’t go bankrupt over med bills. (Compare that to the US system, where hc costs are a leading cause of personal bankruptcies.)
      5. preexisting conditions are covered.
      6. you don’t lose your coverage if you lose your job, and no one is “locked into” a job just for health care coverage
      7. no premiums, co-payments, deductibles, or caps
      8. no claims to file
      9. No burden on businesses.
      10. No bureaucrat, public or private, comes between you and your doctor. (Compare that to the US system where insurance co. bureaucrats tell you whether you can get treatment, what type of treatment you can have, what doctors you can see, whether or not you can go to the hospital or not and if so for how long.)
      11. Compared to the US system single payer system produces, according to the World Health Organization and other non-partisan expert sources such as The Commonwealth Fund, as good or better health outcomes by medical condition.
      12. When the rich and politically powerful are served by the same hc system as everyone else, they will be fully invested in making sure it works.

Single payer, contrary to the Republican propaganda, is NOT “government controlled health care” nor “socialized medicine”, nor “government takeover of health care”, nor government run health care”.

Reasons why single payer is far more efficient and costs far less per capita:

Administrative simplicity and reduction in the portion of health care dollars going to non-health care uses:. Eg: overhead rate for Medicare – 3%. Overhead rate of insurance industry – 13%. With single payer you eliminate the costs of advertising, sales forces, lawyers to draft a bevy of fine print policies and fight payment of claims, profits, dividends to shareholders, massive CEO salaries, lobbying and campaign finance programs, and duplication of administrative bureaucracies across the myriad of public and private health care systems like Medicare, Medicaid, VA hc system etc.

Bulk buying/negotiation power: Think of it this way, if a buyer from the local Mom and Pop hardware store and a buyer from Home Depot go to a widget supplier, who do you think will be offered the lowest price? There is a powerful incentive for competing health service providers and drug suppliers to offer the lowest prices to the highest volume buyer. it’s the reason that single payer countries the world over pay far less for prescription drugs than Americans do for the exact same drugs made by the exact same companies.

    2. @Dean Top Problems for Small-Business Owners: topping the list was Cost of providing health care coverage to employees. Majority of small businesses are in favor of Medicare For All. https://www.commonwealthfund.org/publications/issue-briefs/2019/sep/small-business-owners-views-health-coverage-costs

Majority of [US] Healthcare Professionals Support Single-Payer System, Poll Says https://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/906703#:~:targetText=Sixty%2Dsix%20percent%20of%20physicians,professions%20opposed%20single%2Dpayer%20healthcare.

    3. @Dean Read the op-ed by Fareed Zakaria, who visited countries around the world to produce a documentary comparing the pro’s, con’s, costs, and health outcomes of different hc systems. He found that the best systems had public financing but private providers. Most importantly, he explains why the free market doesn’t work when it comes to health care, and why every other advanced nation has gone to some form of universal health care. Mar. 30, 2017 https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/trump-was-right-about-health-care-for-most-of-his-life/2017/03/30/2f3d58cc-158e-11e7-ada0-1489b735b3a3_story.html?noredirect=on&utm_term=.f89c1dbcb670

  7. It hasn’t gone unnoticed to me that virtually all advertising on MSNBC is for drugs. I think “discussions” like these should be required to post statements like “This Message Approved by The Pharmaceutical Industry.”

    1. @Adaryll Kelly Why would you want a government that can’t get anything done or get along, to run your healthcare ? They’re idiots ! 2 million people will lose their jobs if Warren’s plan goes through . Try getting a job that has health insurance . Then you don’t have to mooch off tax payers money

  8. I gotta tell ya, after I made my comment I went and read everyone else’s and couldn’t be happier that everyone else feels the same way. Looks like you’ve misread your audience MSNBC, either that or your actively trying to push an agenda. Either way I’m almost done with you, since ratings are all you care about anymore, take note of the comment sections here….

    1. Are you kidding? They don’t give a Goddam about comment section. I’m surprised that they even ALLOW the comment section to be open. They only care about their advertising dollars.

  9. Which Voters Are Buying The ‘Medicare For All’ Idea? about 70% of us, haven’t you been watching the news, polls or try talking to the people?

    1. @Web Grep In-Depth Analysis by Team of UMass Amherst Economists Shows Viability of Medicare For All
Comprehensive plan is estimated to reduce U.S. health consumption expenditures by nearly 10 percent, while providing decent health care coverage to all Americans, https://www.umass.edu/newsoffice/article/depth-analysis-team-umass-amherst

So where are you getting YOUR figures? Oh, right, Fox News, aka GOP-TV, aka the conservative echo chamber, aka Trump State TV.

    2. @Web Grep If single payer is such a “fairy tale”, why has it proven to cost far less per capita in all countries that have adopted some form of shingle payer? Hmmmm?

    3. @Web Grep “Undocumented immigrants pay billions of dollars in federal taxes each year”, (yet are not eligible for many benefits and programs US taxpayers can take advantage of.) https://www.vox.com/2018/4/13/17229018/undocumented-immigrants-pay-taxes

According to SSI in 2010 undocumented workers contributed about 12 billion dollars to FICA despite almost certainly not being able to claim any benefits at retirement. An additional 10 billion dollars were paid by illegals into state and local taxes again without the expectation of having any say as to how those tax dollars are spent.

  10. Watching this from Australia where we have medicare available for all. This desperate attempt from the ‘news’ to keep advertiser money is pretty disgusting.

    1. @Pinhead Larry Cost of Canada’s single payer, 10% of GDP. Cost of the U.S. hc system, 18% of GDP.
The amount Canadians pay in taxes to support single payer, that covers everyone, is far less than U.S. citizens pay in taxes, private insurance premiums, co-payments, deductibles, and direct pays, for a system that still leaves tens of millions without coverage, tens of millions more under insured, millions forgoing health care because of the cost, and medical bills a leading cause of personal bankruptcies.
