This story is absolutely tragic and I feel for all the children that died and were hurt. Having said that there is a lot missing from this story. A simple google search shows this involves the LeBaron family , they are far from angels. Interesting BBC story about them. Murder, child brides, polygamy and abuse.

I’m amused by how the media is treating this story as it pertains to describing this religious sect and the total lack of backstory leading up to this horrific event. Firstly, they aren’t Mormons by definition because the LDS Church ruling body in Salt Lake City doesn’t consider them members. They are instead a breakaway sect that went to Mexico decades ago to practice old school Mormonism (polygamy/underage brides). It would be like referring to a Protestant as still Catholic after they broke away from the Papacy. Secondly, these people have been at war with the local Mexican drug cartels for decades and have had several gun battles with them in the past. They also report to Mexican and US authorities any observed cartel activities. As a result, they live within a highly guarded private compound, are well armed, and have their own private militia. This massacre of women and children is simply the latest round of open hostilities between these two groups. But all that aside, it’s waaaay past time to send the full strength of the US military into Mexico and kill every drug-slinging cartel SOB in the country. The Mexican federal government is and always has been a corrupt joke in the back pocket of the cartels.
