You have the right to say what you want and we have the right to shout you down – that’s our free speech.
@Laura Walker He got to speak, he got shouted down. We didn’t listen.
@Charles Ritter No I don’t. I’m not afraid of anyone’s words but I will exercise my right to shout them down. That’s the definition of free speech.
@Trashboªt because I’m the bomb
Elle always does an amazing job in the pieces she works on.
Especially Charlottesville, camping out with an armed Cryin’ Chris Cantwell while the feds “couldn’t find him” on top of paying for his transport and travel.
Tough assignment being a chaperone to a plant, but otherwise they’d never have had the shot where he waits for his queue in a static shot and then changes the chant, which CNN’s Fareed and HBO’s Bill Maher then sold ’round the world.
Funny how his audio continues in the oft repeated clip, played every time that day is mentioned, and is overlaid on images of other people who never said those very specifically *chosen* words… even if the words they were saying meant exactly the same thing. It’s the sensastionalism that sells, baby.
Oh, what about that time she got CNN’s own Richard Spenser to say “Socialism can work, it just hasn’t been done right yet” meme, unironically and verbatim, on the capital mall, by allowing him to talk to a female wahmen for more than 5 minutes.
Nah… the best one was where she tried to paint civil war reenactors as active Confederate Regiments in disguise. That one was TOP TIER.
Never really seen her in “action” before, actually. But she sure made a good impression on me here.
here voice gives me npr and i love it
*AS A EUROPEAN* all I see is students expressing their first amendment rights to protest which is free speech.
“Free Speech” does not mean you have thr right to have people LISTEN, it means you can say what you want and the government won’t stop you or lock you up for it.
Why yell that you’re European?
@B Babbich Have a guess.
Elle Reeve is the coolest reporter you have on staff.
Sorry, answered the wrong comment.
“if someone’s going to inflict harm on you, do you debate them?” exactly!! this applies to SO many issues in the world. if someone won’t change their mind about human rights you debating them will not do anything.
@Deeds wrong thread? I assume so because what you’ve posted makes absolutely no sense nor shares relevancy with anything pointed out in this comment thread thus far.
@A. Alphbond “This is how they start. They keep saying it till it becomes normalised and then they start building the camps.”
That is your paranoia. I live in the real world.
@Uninformed Opinion he called for the eradication of the trans community. Saying he was talking about transgenderism as an ideology is bullshit because you can’t separate transgenderism from the transgender community
@Don Jindra History always repeats its self. Hitler was the first, and certainly wouldn’t be the last.
Another great piece by Elle Reeve. She is soft-spoken and effective. Nice juxtaposition.
You can not erase my community and you can’t not erase me! We will overcome! 🇺🇸💕🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️🌈
@Steven wow. Someone is heated!
Believe what you will . Like sand castles on the beach , the Ocean of Truth erases everything . It’s a just a matter of time .
The best way for right to get into limelight is to create controversy. I think people should give them less attention by inviting a prominent guest speaker on the same day who works on trans rights when they invite such controversial figures. By acknowledging such personalities, you are actually giving them power.
Good point, good strategy
Stop grooming children.
Good strategy, let the haters speak to a non-crowd. It may have them questioning their beliefs instead of further backing them into a corner.
@Crispin Fornoff Are you talking to Ali Alexander? He’s a groomer extraordinaire.
“The only thing needed for the triumph of evil, is for good men to stand back and do nothing”. These people get that.
This man used the word “eradicate” about what to do with the “trans issue”. That’s not exactly coded language. Giving him a microphone with no pushback, would have been like bringing a Nazi in to discuss “the Jewish question” and expecting everyone to listen respectfully to his valid points.
Someone needs to stand up and say “This is about people’s right to exist. This should not be a debate topic.”
There’s a difference between not listening and trying to silence someone.
Unless an officer hauled off that conservative speaker in cuffs, their right to free speech was duly protected. As was the students’ right to tell them to GTFO because human decency and the right of other people to exist is not up for debate.
@Stephen Lewis They have every right to speak. There are people that have a right to hear him speak. You have no right to deny another’s right to hear the message.
@NewLeftToday Use the restroom that aligns with biological sex. Period.
@Marietta Smith so no book banning, right? People should be able to dress the way they want, right?
Protesting speakers is different than stopping them from speaking.
Much like claiming to be a woman is different than being a woman.
Why does it now require mutilation and harming drugs to be “yourself”?
@NowOne do you reckon when people get cleft palate surgery they are mutilating themselves? or what about when someone gets their tonsils removed? I don’t see these kinds of protests going on about circumcisions – which is crazy, because the person involved doesn’t make their own decision on that one. I think you just have no idea, and perhaps talking to a trans person first hand about why would be beneficial for your world view. Harmful drugs you say? Well, I mean every drug could be harmful, but the odds are it won’t be. I’m not american, but when I visited and saw all the drugs advertising you guys have on tv, followed by all the risks of taking those drugs….. maybe you’ve decided they are all scary and don’t take any of them if you’ve got that opinion here. Puberty blockers can cause issues, but they are less substantial than the death by suicide that they combat. Trans people taking estrogen of testosterone? I think you’ll find almost all people of a certain age will start taking those things, so they aren’t really doing anything special are they.
“We can disagree and still love each other unless your disagreement is rooted in my oppression and denial of my humanity and right to exist.” James Baldwin
Exactly!
💯
I wish I had the means to go and personally thank every one of these young people for raising their voices like this. There are so many like myself in the trans community who grew up in a world where we were so often merely objects of ridicule, and not even considered human. It is in many ways terrifying to be dragged into the spotlight in the way we have been in recent years. After having survived decades of abuse and literal torture; its hard to allow ourselves to expect anything except more of the same, especially when these hate mongers are now saying the quiet part out loud. The fact that the younger generation is so determined stand up for us because they believe the world is better with us in it is truly humbling.
With many heartfelt tears, thank you!
I love you, you are beautiful and you have my support and love <3
I wish you all the best Elena, I accept all people for who they are. That being said, I am Also a proponent that everyone have the right to speak without being “drowned out”. I don’t agree nor disagree with everything this man says, we have to be able to have honest conversations about the blurred lines of sex and gender without always assuming it comes from a place of hate. I don’t think the majority of right wingers have hate towards the Trans community, I think they are worried about the extremists who refuse to acknowledge the distinction between reality and fiction. Honestly – I truly think those on the left do not always have your best interest in mind, but their own. All I ask is you hear out some on the right, even if it comes off as harsh.
Go get some mental health asap
Why does being “yourself” now require damaging drugs and knives?
Let the speakers speak and let the protesters protest. I love seeing the young student activists picking up the torch. As a Boomer, I’m weary of the battle (not out just weary). It warms my heart to see others getting involved. I’m also a decorated combat vet–the rights to speak, protest, and question leadership was what I felt I was fighting for.
Thank you for your service. These young folks give me hope.
Awesome Post, thank you!
Proud of these students!
@shards0fwords They’re so closed minded it’s painful. They want to silence all dissent to their BS ideologies.
@shards0fwords That’s ironic, right?
(Hard to tell.)
@PC 4MLC Indeed they do.
It’s so much simpler and comfortable!
‘They take less crap’ 👏👏👏👏
Thank you Ellie Reeve for telling what these “conservative” groups (fascists) are actually doing and trying to do!!! We’ve needed this for years!
There is no way Elle is 41! She looks like she’s 21. That’s amazing and so is she. I love her segments.
Once gain, Elle reeves really lays it out in a way that any could follow, I just love her. She is by far the #1 journalist on tv right now. And has been. Just brilliant.
I am so proud of our young people and university students! We need to support and encourage them–and their desire to ensure that EVERYONE is valued and respected!
