Logan McLean no one should have to choose between voting and possibly contracting covid. And it does come to that. If we’ve learned anything from Wisconsin’s primary election is just that. Many people contracted the virus while standing in extremely long lines, for hours, to vote. Milwaukee had only five polls open. There are usually around 200. There has to be absentee ballots available.

Actually, my german relatives tell me a different story. Prices went up steeply in the ’90s and every other year postage fees also go up. DHL handles parcel and is said to be a disaster most of the time because the poor drivers get peanuts and have to work overtime most of the time. I hear similar stories from Switzerland where the state owned postal service was privatized in this century and post offices are closed and consolidated everywhere… mind you, these are countries with much, much less remote rural areas unlike the US.
@Ganiscol Postage fees aren’t going up every other year. When we switched from dm to euro, postage for letters was changed from 1 dm to 0.51 €. Eighteen years later postage is 0.80 €. That’s not even the inflation during those years. You can send three A4 pages for that price. I’ve got friends in Florida, South Carolina, Texas and Nevada. All of them sent me tiny packages and had to pay 13.50 $ three or four years ago. At that time I sent packages of about the same size and weight as letter to the USA for 3.70 €. It seems postage in the US is much more expensive than in Germany. Unfortunately the US demands customs declarations for even the tiniest gifts you want to send to your friends now, so I must send them as parcels now. The postage is 8.89 €, but I can send 2kg instead of 200g for that price. You’re right about some of the drivers. I don’t know how many of them work with sub-contractors, but as far as I know, the better part of them is still working with DHL/Deutsche Post directly, so these drivers are paid properly. I guess nobody in Germany would defend the practice of using sub-contractors, but if you look at UPS and other private logistic companies, you’ll see that they’re much worse off. They work even longer hours for real bad wages. I moved places in Germany a couple of times the past twenty years and up to now I had no reason to complain about DHL/Deutsche Post. Every letter, every parcel arrived in time and was in perfect order. And in case I’m not at home, I can pick up parcels at the post office in my village and it’s only a three minutes walk. All other logistics services have their plants at the other end of the next town. I haven’t got a car, and it would be a journey of two hours by bus. That’s quite common in Germany and that’s why I try to avoid these logistic companies. As I said, there’s a post office in every village. That won’t change, because our government makes them provide this kind of service. DHL/Deutsche Post isn’t fully privatized. You shouldn’t believe everything people tell you, especially not if it’s about postage fees in Germany. Germans will almost always tell you, that they have to pay too much, but after I received my first parcels from the US, I feel like our postal service is really cheap.
