“As a country we are going to have to make a choice; we need to bring an end to the mixed signals,” says Prime Minister Skerrit

Friday, December 18th is Election Day in Dominica

Roseau, Dominica – November 20, 2009…..Prime Minister, Hon. Roosevelt Skerrit has demarcated the battle lines and outlined in detail the ideological and philosophical differences between his governing Dominica Labour Party and the opposition parties as the country prepares for arguably the most important  General Election in the post independence era.

At a rally of the Dominica Labour Party in Mahaut on Thursday evening, Party Leader and Prime Minister, Hon. Roosevelt Skerrit announced that Dominicans would go to the polls on Friday, December 18th 2009. Nomination Day will be on Wednesday, December 2nd 2009.

In his address to party supporters carried live on radio and television, Prime Minister Skerrit stated that his Dominica Labour Party is the only political party in Dominica “with a clear and stated vision for how we will advance this country and from where we will get the resources to do such”.

“I repeat without fear of contradiction, that as of tonight, there is only one vision and one plan on the table for taking Dominica forward and  to the next level, and that is the vision and the plan of the Dominica Labour Party,” Prime Minister Skerrit stated.

The Dominica leader expressed concern about the mixed signals and conflicting messages that are being sent out by the Opposition parties to countries like Venezuela, China and Cuba.

” I can well understand the confused messages that are sent and received by the People’s Republic of China, for example where today, the Prime Minister of Dominica meets the Chinese Ambassador to Dominica in Roseau, and tomorrow, Dominica’s Leader of the Opposition meets with the Taiwanese Ambassador to St. Kitts in the capital city of Basseterre.

“I can understand the concern and consternation of our friends in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, where today the current Government of Dominica has clearly embraced their expression of friendship and cooperation, but conversely, the Opposition of Dominica has indicated at every opportunity its intention to sever ties with the Government of President Hugo Chavez…..

The Prime Minister delivered an ominous warning that there is so much at stake in the coming election.

“Tonight in Dominica, the future of PetroCaribe is in limbo. Tonight in Dominica, the future of ALBA is in limbo. Tonight in Dominica, several hundred million dollars worth of capital projects are in limbo because of the mixed and confusing signals and messages sent by the opposition political parties of this country. ”

“Fellow Dominicans, this is a very serious state of affairs. The economic well-being of our country is at stake. Tonight, it is under siege,” Prime Minister Skerrit warned.

At the last General Elections held on May 5, 2005, the Dominica Labour Party captured twelve (12) of the twenty-one (21) constituencies in the Parliament. The United Workers Party won eight (8) seats with one (1) independent.
