That is a capital crime in Leviticus. What would you think of a man selling one or more of his children to pay his gambling debts? That is sanctioned by Leviticus. This “what is stated is not what is meant” is such a duplicitous tactic, and one that has long been a pet peeve of mine since it is often employed to defend the parts of religious texts that are utterly indefensible.
If 45* or a religious text states something that people support or coheres with reality, then it’s “he is serious/the text is literal”.
If 45* or the text says something utterly immoral, absurd/false then it’s “he isn’t serious, that isn’t to be taken literally, it’s a mistranslation, context is needed” etc.
This cherry picking is a total subterfuge and employed by intellectually dishonest as well as immature people.

If politicians are corrupt, it’s the collective duty of the people to do what is right for everyone; but religion is only wrong if it is corrupt, not just because it’s disagreeable. Religion is corrupted when people try to justify what they don’t understand; they fail to understand bc they refuse to be taught. Sometimes we forget that we once knew nothing. Care for the soul to see what’s real, care for the body while you have it.
