Gene editing will save people from suffering and losing their lives.
To pick traits for future children is no big deal but religious people will try and make it so. They’re the same people who got out of joint with “test tube babies” only to use the procedure.

And just how many movies about genetically created mutants or monsters that have tried to destroy the world has there been?
gee the ethical questions. should we let them be susceptible to sickle cell or not? not really a difficult decision. aesthetics and the subjective nature of “improvement” aside, the only thing wrong with eugenics of the past was that it was imposed on people. ethically, eliminating the transmission of life-threatening diseases vertically is not really that different from eliminating transmission horizontally.

Although many think negatively towards the CRISPR system, I remain positive. Despite the fact that CRISPR has its risks and problems (like all things in life), it is an astonishing discovery. People are simply afraid of the science fiction and fantasy they have seen, heard or read which leads them to think that from the beginning CRISPR is something evil or related to “the mad scientist” or something like that…
This is exactly what the movie Gattaca warned us about. SMH

Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should.
We are one human race. Skin tone does not mean we are all related as one human race and should love our neighbor as ourselves. But we live in a society where people are not open minded and this has resulted in bigotry and hatred. Differences in tradition and culture does not make people a different race. We are one human race and should treat one another with love and respect.
WOW. HITLER DID GENE EDITING TOO. IMAGINE THAT.
Three things:
1) Hitler did not do gene editing. He led a massive genocide, but that is not gene editing. He was a proponent of eugenics, and probably would have been all over this idea, but we didn’t even have the ability to map DNA sequences until decades after his death. To say that he practiced gene editing is a gross misstatement of facts.
2) Hitler was also a proponent of animal welfare, passed smoking bans throughout Germany, and probably would agree that we need air to breathe. Just because someone bad agrees with something (or might have, if they were still alive) does not *automatically* mean that the idea is bad. In cases such as this, it means we should pause and consider things carefully, but anything good can be turned into something awful by a bad person (for example, the Bible and “science” were both long used to justify slavery in the United States).
3) This technology has its dangers, but it also carries a lot of hope. This technology would be amazing for people who suffer from autoimmune diseases such as Type I Diabetes, lupus, and Multiple Sclerosis. It could repair damage done to people’s DNA and RNA by environmental hazards such as chemical pollutants in the soil, water, and/or work environments. It could allow a couple who both carry the Tay-Sachs gene to have a child safely. A fetus with the DNA markers of progeria could have a decent chance at living to see puberty and even adulthood.
Virtually every technological breakthrough has come with dire warnings about how it could be the end of the human race, or at the very least a good chunk of it. But while fear is a good reason to be cautious, it is not a reason to not do something.
