The Waitukubuli National Trail Project (WNTP) has entered the implementation phase with the commencement of a series of training programmes in Trail Construction and Maintenance and Vegetation Management.
One of these training sessions is currently ongoing in the vicinity of the Emerald Pool Eco-tourist Site. The training commenced on Tuesday, 12th February 2008, and will run through to Saturday, 16th February 2008. This specific training programme is a practical one and signifies the beginning of the construction phase of the trail.
The Acting Honourable Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, the Honourable Minister for Tourism, Legal Affairs and Civil Aviation, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry and staff of the Project Management Unit of the WNTP are expected to visit the trail on Friday, 15th February 2008, between 11:00 a.m and 3:00 p.m.
The Waitukubuli National Trail will be constructed in fourteen (14) discontinued segments through the entire island in a north to south direction.
The Waitukubuli National Trail Project is being implemented by the Government of Dominica with funding from the European Union under the Special Framework of Assistance (SFA 2003), at a cost of approximately EC$14 million. The purpose of the project is to promote Dominica’s tourism, nature, heritage and culture through the development of a national trail across the island.
A Project Management Unit (PMU) with responsibility for implementing this project was established and began operations on August 1, 2007. (Ends)
