Project Management Unit of WNTP and Kiwanis Club of Roseau collaborate
Roseau, Dominica – March 17, 2009 ……… The Project Management Unit of Waitukubuli National Trail Project is partnering with the Kiwanis Club of Roseau for this year’s annual National Secondary Schools Debating Competition.
The Waitukubuli National Trail will come under the spotlight during the semi-finals round of the competition which will be held on Wednesday, March 18, 2009. There will be two debates on that date.
This is one of the activities geared at intensifying outreach to schools and relevant organizations in the interest of sensitizing and educating youth on the Waitukubuli National Trail. It is also expected to enlighten Dominican youth on the benefits and opportunities presented by the Trail as well as to raise consciousness on our natural and cultural heritage.
Ø The Saint Mary’s Academy will compete against the Isaiah Thomas Secondary School on the topic: “The Waitukubuli National Trail is the most effective product in Dominica today that can lead to Sustainable Development”. The event is carded for the UWI Open Campus Auditorium, from 3pm.
Ø The North East Comprehensive will go against the Portsmouth Secondary School with the topic: “The Waitukubuli National Trail is the best initiative ever, for enhancing and transforming the tourism product of Dominica.” The debate will take place at the St. Martin’s Secondary School Auditorium, starting at 3pm.
The debates will provide the opportunity for the students participating to undertake the necessary research on the Waitukubuli National Trail. It will also give the youth themselves the chance to articulate on topics related to WNT, to share information with their peers and make a contribution that can benefit the country’s tourism development.
The PMU/WNTP continues to collaborate with schools, youth organizations and agencies working with young persons on a number of initiatives in its efforts towards youth outreach.
The Waitukubuli National Trail is a long distance trail estimated at 184km or 115 miles. The trail, which will traverse the island in a north-south direction, comprises fourteen discontinued segments.
The WNTP is being implemented through a Grant Contract with resources from the European Union’s Special Framework of Assistance (SFA) 2003 allocation.
