These people don’t understand the difference between socialism and communism. Neither does Trump which is why he latches on to the buzz words. Also, Democrats are not FOR socialism. Finally, the Republicans just handed out taxpayer money to failing corporations which is more socialist than anything I’ve seen so far…

What has Trump done against Maduro?, nothing at all, and that is what really matters. How can Trump be against socialism when he cozies up to Kim Jong Un, Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping?. No democrat do that.

No one in the US knows what socialism is, least of all the Bernie crowd. Having high welfare spending within a capitalist system is not socialism, it‘s European style social democracy, which is of course still capitalism. Socialism means the dispossesion of the owning class, it means the dictatorship of the proletariat.

Most Socialist and Social Democrat parties in Europe have, in the case of my native Germany since the early 20th century, made the choice to work with the system, get officials elected and try to effect change by legal means, not by revolution.
That would also entail that as an original Socialist or if you will Social Democrat, you wouldn’t set out to “disposess” the owning class but pass laws that make them contribute a portion of their wealth toward the greater good. That’s very much an oversimplification, but we are talking about a sophisticated concept here, that believe it or not, has evolved quite a bit over time.
The “dictatorship of the prolatariat” is an entirely Russian invention and is a lot more totalitarian in nature than any socialist or even communist ideas. Soviet intellectuals and ideologistst always justified it by claiming it was only a temporary solution until full communiusm could be achieved.
What is being practiced here in Europe is not entirely the “free market economy” you guys in the states know, but much rather what we here in Germany call a “social market economy”, which simply means that we do sort of have captalism, but with a hefty dose of “socialist” stuff, like among other things, a state run pension system, unemployment insurance and most notably for you guys: universal healthcare.
All these things have been around for more than a century, by now and not even our conservatives wouldn’t dare try to abolish that or cut it too much, so it has become a lot more than just “European style Social Democracy” as you put it.
Sorry to have hit you with that wall of text, but you’ve rather proved my point and i do want to make at least an effort to try and explain my POV.
The problem in Latin America is not Socialism or Capitalism, no, the problem is corruption, cartels running local governments, US involvement in supporting corrupt officials, the illegal sale of military firearms, lack of education and job opportunities…THIS is our problem in Latin America.

“Socialism” is not a monolith. It isn’t so much of an ideology as it is a system of governance. Corrupt leaders use the term of “socialism” as a Human shield to hide behind when they are robbing and murdering their people, but murder and theft are not components of the system of “socialism”. “Capitalists” hide behind the Human shield of that term to do unto others the exact same theft and murder as “socialists” do. It’s not about the system; it’s about who is wielding the power. Example: Donald J. Trump claims to be a “capitalist” and then uses taxpayer money to fund his golf outings while exhorting Americans to congregate in Covid-19 spreading events that eventually end up killing many of the congregants.
Republican just recently stood silent when trump rolled in the military to silence protestors! Your last worry at this point should be socialism lol.
