US officials say this ‘revealing moment’ hints at morale problems in Russia’s military

A rare face-to-face meeting between Russian and US military officials last week led to an "outburst" of emotion from a normally stoic Russian general, a "revealing moment" that the Americans present believe hinted at larger morale problems in Russia's military, according to a closely held US military readout of what transpired. CNN's Barbara Starr reports. #CNN #News

  1. What a General says is one thing. However, when the Kremlin spokesman says you have to _consider_ whether claims of low morale in the military are actually true-then yes, there is a big problem.

    1. 23 years ago, 19 NATO countries dropped 10,000 bombs on Yugoslavia… Without UN sanction…Russia is not Yugoslavia… 70% of Russians have been morally ready for nuclear war since 2014… Does the US understand that the world is guaranteed to be destroyed??? I don’t think so…

  2. Russia spokesman: “You probably have to doubt….” he sound not so sure about his own propaganda.

    1. At least they knew about what’s going to happen if that continued on and he felt concerned about the propaganda, the soldier’s well-being and about Ukraine.

  3. There’s so much inter mingling between Ukraine and Russia, historically and presently that unless Ukrainians greeted Russian troops or the war was over in a few days, would this invasion work. A not insignificant portion of the Russian army has a mother, father, aunt, etc who’s Ukrainian. Imagine the us invading Canada under some obvious bs pretext. Same situation. Add to that poor training and tactics and you’ve got huge morale problems.

    1. @Thomas Hedrick you are quite right. The war of 1812 started because we invaded Canada a number of times since our founding, not the other way around. If the British and Howe had pushed it, there would be no America today. They almost cleaned our clocks.

    2. @Gary Torresani yes, but Canada and the US will always be together. In 1812 there would be no victory as far as transparent, but at the same time we would all be weaker than the UK

    3. 23 years ago, 19 NATO countries dropped 10,000 bombs on Yugoslavia… Without UN sanction…Russia is not Yugoslavia… 70% of Russians have been morally ready for nuclear war since 2014… Does the US understand that the world is guaranteed to be destroyed??? I don’t think so…

    4. @TeaParty1776
There most certainly is international law, as promulgated by the UN. The problem which you hint at is that there is no international police force. This means that it is up to individual nations to bring cases before the International Criminal Court. This can result in a rather uneven application of international justice, with powerful nations such as the US, who few want to offend, often doing exactly as they please. Weaker nations, such as Serbia, have their war criminals hauled off to the ICC, convicted, and are now serving very long sentences in a number of countries.

  4. Having an unquestionable and feared leader is not the way to run anything smoothly. No one will want to go out of their way for him or even have any sense of genuine loyalty. It’s just ridiculous that anyone would think of it as an effective model.

Especially in this day and age of information where people can easily see all sides of the dispute and see the lies being used on them which just fosters even more hatred and morale problems.

We’re seeing the cracks already with everyone blaming each other and the poor training, I’m amazed they function at all.

    1. @Petter N European people don’t need any god. Millions of European (highly developed)died due to covid but they couldn’t do anything.Every part of science directly or indirectly claims the existence of god.Would you please give me some logic why god does not exist.

    2. @Petter N I have told you that Quran challenged all the humanity to write a chapter somewhat like Quran. Why don’t people can’t do that. Who can claim that?

    3. Maybe Putin planned for tens of thousands of young Russian men to die? Makes him feel big, like over 5 ft.

    4. 23 years ago, 19 NATO countries dropped 10,000 bombs on Yugoslavia… Without UN sanction…Russia is not Yugoslavia… 70% of Russians have been morally ready for nuclear war since 2014… Does the US understand that the world is guaranteed to be destroyed??? I don’t think so…

  5. When he heard the phrase “The beatings will continue until morale improves.”, Putin saw it as a good move rather than ironic statement.

    1. @William Jones

The New World Order was just announced by Biden, sooo, no your not all good. You really NEED to READ and UNDERSTAND what I shared

    2. All these Russian bots and Putin fanboys have been really getting beaten down the last few weeks lol.

    3. Maybe Putin planned for tens of thousands of young Russian men to die? Makes him feel big, like over 5 ft.

    4. I wonder how long embarrassed Chechens will put up with this utter humiliation of the cowardly 😪Russia army before they decide to give sovereignty another shot? 🤷‍♂️

  6. Imagine being a dedicated Russian patriot such as this general and ordered to destroy your family’s home and extended family for trumped up reasons. How long will he go along with this?

    1. I wonder how long embarrassed Chechens will put up with this utter humiliation of the cowardly Russia army before they decide to give sovereignty another shot?

    2. @Suzanne D huh?? Biden is “decent and reasonable” and not a madman? The same hypocrite elitist warmonger with little cognitive abilities and was bff with a klansman? and who incarcerated millions of Americans because there skin color? Ur a sick person.

    1. The people that always talk about morals are probably the last people that shouldn’t be talking about it, like for example self righteous Americans who think they are on a moral high ground yet wiped out children and babies all around the middle east and the world. The irony

  7. I hope they had a really good reason to release that readout – it is important, particularly in times of conflict, for military officials to speak with each other as frankly as possible. Being outed like that is no small thing (either for the guy himself when Putin hears about it, or for diplomacy more broadly).

    1. NATO will grow again and drastically increase weaponry on the eastern border. Putin must secretly be getting a kickback from NATO, or he’s just stupid. Plus the number of “anti-Russian” people in Ukraine has skyrocketed. Meanwhile Russia will be too broke to rearm themselves for the next 10 years. Putin is too dumb to quit, too cowardly to win.

    2. My guess is that releasing this information is strategic. Though I doubt the main intent is to get the general killed. More likely it is to put him, and his fellow generals on the spot, forcing their hands. Should Putin start making examples of high-level generals by killing them off, it just might spur a modern-day Valkyrie response by those closest to Putin. Putin has fallen into the same trap that Hitler did, his top confidantes are starting to see him as more of a liability than a leader. The bigger question is, will they remove him before he does something more reckless than fighting a conventional war with his closest neighbor? Which makes for rather scary times. Putin has become unhinged, much like his American puppet Trump, lashing out at anyone not singing his praises.

    4. My thoughts 💭 as well; making that public could be signing his death ☠️ warrant. It would seem like a better tactic to leave him in good stead with Putin and let him do whatever he can from a position of power, Instead of doing the FSB/KGB’s work for them and just blurt out who they need to distrust. I hope 🤞🏼 our intelligence people know something that we don’t. I hope 🤞🏼 they have good reasons for outing him. Sounds like he COULDA BEEN a possible asset to democracy.

    2. @XXX Sure, Glavset. Whatever you say. It’s cool that you know French too, though. Respect for that.

    3. @axilleaspap Ko So let me get this straight… you’re worried about Ukraine joining NATO. So you invade the country preemptively. Thus assuring that, first chance they get, they’re probably going to join NATO. Great plan.

    4. @Tin Watchman As the Ukraine crisis
      has become world focus,
even though they know the cause is
NATO’s relentless eastward expansion. The US has given up the mask and
exposed its true face of “empire of lies”.
      Eighteen years ago,
it attacked Iraq under the excuse of
      a tube of washing powder.
while it is the one in danger.
      To quote Mike Pompeo,
it lies, it cheats, it steals.
      In the US, media outlets
      are controlled by capital,
which only cares about making a profit.
Anyone trying to tell the truth is maligned.
Time for US politicians to know
      that their fabricated lies will
      always go bankrupt one day,
and their national credit will go bankrupt. Regrettably, this war taught us that only Western hegemony is the only value.

    5. @Tin Watchman politics is always the root of all cause and menace behind the sufferings of the innocent civilian s. Basically i don’t root for either side, this has been a long civil war between the political factions (pro Russian Ukrainians and rightists/conservatives) to rein in power lobbying etc, And then you have other factors such instigators (US, Nato) that trigger the fire. According to Polish friend, missiles have been deployed all around the Ukraine border and Baltic States against them, by Nato, and Ukraine has been influenced/manipulated by US all along thus creating those tensions.
Zelensky is a comedian He did what he thinks was probably some seditious separatists and is trying to avoid another Crimea incident, where Crimea was annexed back to Russia. Anyhow politics is complicated and sometimes It is all about power grab and for the money/oil/resources. In the end it is the civilians that suffer, no other people that is exonerated from responsibility than these politicians/muppets. Nevertheless the point is do help any poor refugee, regardless whether they are Afghans, Syrians, Palestinians, Yemenis, humanity has no border. They are innocent victims of war.

  8. For decades everyone thought that Russia had the second best army in the world. Now, it appears to be that the Russian army is just the second best army in Ukraine! 🥴

    1. Similar sentiment was felt towards Germany in the late thirties. Germans weren’t a military superpower. so the West thought they are not a problem. Unfortunately, Germans managed to lift their army a lot in a very short period of time, by putting the entire state on the concentrated propaganda crack. russia could still do the same. They are receiving billions every day for oil and gas. Inside the country, people live in an alternative informational universe. For many, the liberal west is an embodiment of evil that hates their country and wants to destroy it. Furthermore, they have the vision of the “greater russia” (read, russian empire), that has been fed to everyone, including small children in every school, for at least a decade now. They may be more dangerous now than they have ever been, imho.

    2. For decades.outside world thought West NATO can protect weaker nations against dictators even aliens. Now we know that they are cowards of the highest order

    3. @Trash Tier Waifu morale will only get worse in Russia. They’re on a downward spiral, due to poor leadership. Putin is a psychopath, but he doesn’t have hitlers charisma.

  9. Imagine as a Russian soldier you are sent to invade a country where you may have relatives or friends and given poor equipment and weapons. And the officer that lied to you about a military exercise he now calls a special military operation, has resulted in you being frozen, hungry and shot at with buddies dying around you. The first chance you get, you’ll either go AWOL, surrender, defect, or shoot the bastard officer in front of you if he tries to take you into another battle for the SPECIAL OPERATION where you stand a good chance of being killed.

    2. This underating of Russia will only cause intensification ultimately chemical and nuclear war. Beware NATO. You are only on borders. Very scared.

    3. 23 years ago, 19 NATO countries dropped 10,000 bombs on Yugoslavia… Without UN sanction…Russia is not Yugoslavia… 70% of Russians have been morally ready for nuclear war since 2014… Does the US understand that the world is guaranteed to be destroyed??? I don’t think so…

    1. Morale was diminished because they were told to invade a brotherly nation with whom they share cultural/linguistic and ethnic ties with. Nothing to do with Russian military training.

    2. This is what is going to happen to CHINA with TAIWAN exactly the same ships sunk with Exocet Missiles No Export Trade as Shipping Stops China then has an Internal Uprising

    3. Russian Army is the “CM PUNK” of the world militaries ; nothing but barking Chihuahuas. They are overhyped and beyond overrated ….nothing but chumps.

    4. They probably never wanted to fight. It never went as scripted.

Either they are not competent, or they don’t wanna fight but they know leaving Ukraine without Putins order would possibly make death to prefer.

  10. When your own soldiers & military leaders have doubts regarding your overall mission & objective, when it’s far from ‘all hands on deck’, then you have a serious issue on your hands. Hard to win a war when not everyone’s buying in.

    1. Definitely Putin want to succeed one way or another…. Eventually when times come and everything feels like falling apart for Putin he’ll use ‘N’ weapon

  11. The fight for Ukraine will be remembered like the Battle of Thermopylae and the leadership of their President Zalenski will be remembered along with the great wartime leaders of the past like Winston Churchill and Franklin Roosevelt.

    1. I am already gathering petitions for a Confederate statue in my city to be replaced by a statue of Zelenskyy.

  12. If they keep this morale problem up, we are going to start seeing “field therapeutic counseling tents” popping up, where Russian military personnel can “workshop” their feelings of inadequacy and irrelevancy. The Ukrainian defenders could set up “special military operation relief stations”, offering milk n’ cookies and free hugs……

    1. Kind of like moral in Viet Nam after 1968 and especially the Tet offensive. American parents had had enough of their sons coming home in caskets. For what did they die? Americans stopped believing the government’s BS. Massive protests at universities. American mothers wanted their sons home, ALIVE. As angry as I am at Putin and the Russian government I feel for those young kids conscripted into the Russian military and especially for their mothers. Whats coming will only get worse. Soon they will all feel the pain of losing loved ones FOR NOTHING. Such a waste of fine young men.

    2. When I was in basic training and we complained our drill sergeants would sing, Wham, Wham, Wham I want my milk n cookies. Very efficient in shutting you down.

To get us motivated and moral up another thing they do randomly would shout out Motivated, motivated, downright motivated and well respond You check us out, you check us out. Well something like that. It’s been awhile.

My point is they had ways to get us motivated and uplift our moral especially with cadences.

  13. I can’t imagine being a Russian soldier driving around Ukraine and seeing all the destroyed tanks and trucks of your predecessors.

    1. I can’t imagine being a Russian commander realising Ukrainians are using a Shopping mall near apartment complexes as an ammo dump and for concealment of MRLS, and having to make the call to bomb it.
Video of the strike shows the HUGE secondary explosion 3MRLS trucks and ammo makes.

  14. I have my doubts if that minister will ever be seen again or if he was “disappeared” by the government.

  15. In this urge to inform and break stories, I hope they didn’t just endanger the Official and his family due to this “reckeless??” reporting.

  16. Wow. A moment of stoic honesty from a Russian military attashe. That’s heartbreaking on too many different levels. I would bet that some day we’ll find out that most Russian high ranking leaders were against this war because of how closely tied together Russian and Ukrainian culture really is. I had an ex-KGB employer in California who was married to a Ukrainian woman. I often wonder how heated some of their dinner conversations must get nowadays.

    1. Russian officers – Maybe against the war but stupid and coward not to do anything to stop it. Hopefully one will find courage and smarts to put and an end to it. One bullet will be enough

    2. Rip to the Russian soldiers and generals against the war the Russian officials will likely make disappear. 🇺🇸❤️🇷🇺

  17. My heart breaks for the children who have died as a result of this war. No words can express the sorrow and pain that many of us feel for those who have been affected. God bless you!
