Roseau, Dominica – July 23, 2010……….. The Commonwealth of Dominica will hold a one-day In-Country Consultation on Monday, July 26th 2010 as part of the preparation process to develop the United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF) for Barbados and the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States for the period 2012 to 2016.
The consultation is one of eight in-country consultations being organised by the United Nations Sub-Regional Team (UNST) in partnership with participating governments and the OECS Secretariat during the period July to September, 2010.
Dominican public sector officials and representatives from civil society organisations, the private sector, development organisations and regional institutions will engage in strategic dialogue with senior representatives of the UNST for Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean at the UNDAF
In–Country Consultation.
It is expected that at the conclusion of the consultation, participants will have achieved the following:
- Have a clear understanding of the UNDAF process and the role of counterparts in the planning and implementation of the framework
- Have an agreement on possible areas of UN support based on national and sub-regional development priorities and the comparative advantage and mandate of the UN
In 1997, as part of the UN reform agenda, the then United Nations Secretary General, Mr. Kofi Annan called upon the UN to articulate a coherent vision and strategy for a united approach towards common development goals at the country level.
For this reason a sub-regional assessment and the UN Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF) were developed and adopted as strategic planning tools for the entire United Nations system. They continue to serve as the primary instrument to define and drive operational activities for development at the country level.
Minister of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Senator the Hon. Alvin Bernard, will deliver an opening statement at the start of the consultation on Monday at the Fort Young Hotel from 8.45 a.m.
A Press Briefing is planned for 5.00 pm on Monday upon the conclusion of the consultation.
