Anti-racism demonstrators in the UK tore down a statue of a 17th-century slave trader, rolled it through the streets and dumped it in the sea on Sunday, in a dramatic act of protest that has shone a spotlight on the country's stubborn colonial legacy.

“Hardened minorities” @1:32 to describe a minority of people protesting is the wrong word choice for this story.
Actually she was talking about the minority of the protesters that got into scuffles with the police. So “hardened” here is used like hard-line or extremist.
auto cache Comprehension clearly isn’t one of your strong points. Hardened minority’s of the protesters not the protesters were hardened minorities
@dwj77 i would have used a different choice of words like deviating, unruly, rowdy, disorderly minor group.
@Dove Daniels or maybe we can learn how to use proper words instead of saying ‘minor group’. What, is it a bunch of kids now?
@I Don’t Get The Joke all i am saying is that she could use other better options. If ” hardened minorities” registers with you well then go ahead.
I was watching V for Vendetta yesterday. Feels more relevant now.
Mind control
WWG1WGA
I fell asleep during that movie when it came out un theaters. I’ll have to give it another go.
Actually we can melt them and reuse those metal…let’s not waste them and pollute the river.
@Myballsitchsomethingfierce a nothing statue is what was thrown into the river.
@I Don’t Get The Joke the very same way that racist have done to black people. So I guess you’re okay with that part of it? But, not the other part when the rabbit finally have the gun.
@Ray Mak Shut Up
That sounds resourceful or we could put it in the museum rather than have it on the street for display.
@sebastian jones better than sounding like he was carved out of clotted cream.
Look, at one time slavery was legal – deal with it. The US had BLACK slave owners and btw most of the west African tribes had slaves. The “ancestors” sold their own people into slavery for GUNS! Guns allowed MORE raids which meant MORE slaves which meant more guns.
Not you per se, but some of these “woke” soy boys act like slavery began with the US and ended last Thursday – its pathetic.
We need to do the same to the Albert Pike statue in D.C.
Albert Pike ok we on it😏
BLUEPRINT5EAST thank you!!!
Alrighty, anybody got a group?
So who is Albert Pike?
Was Albert Pike a slave owner?
They played “roll the crackaaa” (and that’s only for slave holders and racists)
😂😂
😆🤣🤣
Its a bit odd to have a statue of someone that sold people
YourOpinionMeansNothing, SoShutUp so it isn’t mob mentality to create a systemic racist system built on a policy of white supremacy where 5% of the people own 95% of the wealth, but it is mob mentality to protest against it and for justice and equality? And a political system that forces bi-partisanship regardless of policy and spectrum? You should rethink who is able to comprehend.
I’m not from the UK but I’m tired of people tolerating racism and doing nothing about it
The pyramids were build by slaves. Why not destroy them to. Also if you forget about history you tend to repeat it.
Yeah? Well… I’m an Atheist, and I think it’s violent to be showing Crucifixion imagery in public spaces.
If you want it taken down, do it the right way. Don’t form a mob to get your way.
@YourOpinionMeansNothing, SoShutUp so why is there a statue of King Richard outside parliament THEN?
“That’s their mind- set America’s European too!!’ Evil!”
And nothing of value was lost.
He already got paid.
@Robert J. Williamson the artist got his just reward. That statue needed to go.
@Robert J. Williamson What a snowflake lol
@El Doktor Montii Snowflake? All he did was list facts. Snowflakes usually say nothing important and insult each other by calling them ‘cuck’ or ‘snowflake’.
@I Don’t Get The Joke HUH you stop that, facts are racist! Along with maths, trees, Channel 4, and anything else whinge artists dream up.
About time those statues come down!
HIP HIP HOORAY.
Much respect. There’s still a lot of statues out here that need to be taken down
History cannot be erased or taken down. The most important historical monuments are those that raise difficult questions and offend our sensibilities. Whitewashing history so we only see the good and not the bad defeats the entire purpose of being informed by history. We do not “honor” this slave trader merely by having his statue up. It may have been built for that purpose, but we no more honor him than we honor an important statue head of Nero. Still, we keep it there for the important reminder to let us know where we have erred in history, and the lessons learned from those that would abuse the human condition. Defacing and destroying these statues harms all of society at large.
@Mulinaster it’s not whitewashing history to take down statues that we’re out up ONLY to oppress minorities, most southern statues were built during times of civil strife like the civil rights movement, all they prove is that the south is as racist and ignorant as it ever was and is nothing but a bunch of bug babies who won’t except they lost a war nearly 2 centuries ago.
@NinjaTyler You literally just defined whitewashing. The fact that those statues were built under circumstances that honor oppression says nothing about our present day decision to keep them there and maintain them – it speaks to our willingness to look back at lessons learned with an open and pragmatic mind so we do not stray there in the future. History is history, whether you like the connotations or not. Removing a statue does not remove the fact, it just removes an important lesson that can no longer be readily learned through the visual cortex or aesthetically or through humanizing the incident.
@Mulinaster whitewashing means to say it never happened, removing a statue doesn’t erase history, a statue honors someone or something, removing a statue says we don’t honor that person or idea, whitewashing would be to say what he did never happened or change what he did, which isn’t happening here.
@NinjaTyler What else did that person do? No one gets a statue for being a businessperson. So what else did he do? Also what’s his name? Do you know anything about this guy?
I thank and appreciate everyone who has gotten out here to protest for us
The races in fish community are not going to accept that statue. 😐
Lol, good one!
😂😂😂 I doubt they’ll complain
Kudos to the protesters 👌💯✨👍👏💪 the same needs to be done to other statues of other racists and Confederate soldiers especially in the US. The world needs to wake up holding their leaders accountable. If they’re not bold to make a change, then we’ll make that move. The death of George Floyd sparked an outrage demanding for equality but now the movement will get bigger with people demanding even more.
These are rioters, not protesters. Rioters are the ones that will get their heads taken off if they try to pull this bs in my town.
Alma, you GO girl! To be 18 years old and to have this “passion for positive change” is great!
She’s adorable
“protesters took care of it”
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
yeah now they can go back to Hampstead feeling like they’re Che Gueveras. So woke, so relevant.
@Jim Elliott You think the demonstrators in Bristol went there from London? They had massive demos of their own.
@Faithless Hound I really don’t care if they came from Weston Super-Mare or the gates of Hell.
LOL Yeah London had some beauts with their chant “Hands up don’t shoot” hey idiots the old bill doesn’t carry GUNS LOL
Im glad they took that trash down but I do not like that they through it in the water 😣
People are piss is this don’t trigger a change nothing will ✊🏿
Let us hope that that change will be to respect history even if we don’t like it in our current political climate. Statues being taken down, especially of evil people, removes an important historical reminder for us all where people have erred so that we can correct our mistakes. Respect history. Respect artwork.
@Mulinaster status Belongs in the Museums!( i will Respect History as Long as REAL history is written About!
>>>People are piss is this don’t trigger a change nothing will<<< You must be completely ignorant of the US civil war.
@Valentin Vazquez Actually what triggers change, is policy in a legislative body, this won’t do a damn thing.
Perhaps, commit your efforts to a new political party that aims in reform.
Just accept systemic racism.
Don’t ask logical questions like “How can the system be racist when the president was black, the attorney general was black, most city mayors are black, most city council board members are black, most inner city chiefs of police are black, thousands of black athletes and actors make millions of dollars a year, there are systems in place such as affermative action that specifically are designed to lift up black people, and most tv and commercials go out of their way to show black people?”
Systemic racism is real, accept it.
His spirit must be depressed in Hell.
Yes yes my London Brother’s & sister’s much love and support Black Lives Matter🙏👍✌
All lives matter
This is weird that the UK got involved in this.
Terrible that George Floyd was killed but why are you making a martyr out of him?
He was a long time criminal and was a drug addict. He held guns on people and he had no regard for their lives. He was in prison 6 times.
When they did his autopsy he had meth and other drugs in his system. He tested positive for covid-19. He resisted arrest. He was not a good example for young black men.
@Daisy June It’s not about one black person its about the institutional & deep rooted racism throughout the world including police brutality
@Daisy June The beginning of the words out of your mouth is FOOLISHNESS and the end of your talk is MISCHIEVOUS MADNESS.” no mo talk!.
All live matter. Then why discriminate black?
I wonder when they’re going to tear down Albert Pike’s statue in DC, he was the founder of the KKK.
@Jack Jones it does in their limited minds.
@Sou Say no, they’re all in Argentina.
@Sou Say I wouldn’t know, and wouldn’t care. What does Hitler have to do with the Southern Confederacy? I explained my way of thinking when I wrote that Nathan Bedford Forrest founded the Klan to help fend off carpet bagger government, and help the impovrished people of the South fight oppression. It was like watching history written in lightening as far as I’m concerned. I believe, “Birth of Nation” was a documentary.
@Discovered I did not know General Pike had a hand in forming the Ku Klux Klan. I only knew of his connection to the Masons. I don’t care for the Masons. Since I’m now acquainted with the facts I’ve changed my mind on his statue. It should stay.
After all of this is done, we NEED to focus & target the central banking system!!!!
Needs to be done asap.
Yes do that but change your title first – show some class.
And after that, the general store!
