His pronunciation is perfectly acceptable in many Hiberno-English dialects, including most of those in the southwest of Ireland. (O’Sullivan is from County Kerry.) His pronunciation stems from the fact that there are no /θ/ (unvoiced th, as in “thin”) or /ð/ (voiced th, as in “there”) sounds in Gaelic. Therefore, before the Irish were influenced by the English language, Gaelic speakers in Ireland were sort of hardwired to process /d/ and /ð/ as the same sound, and /t/ and /θ/ as the same sound.
