No one said the virus is fake. The COVID numbers are inflated. Medical officials that conduct testing have counted one test as 2. When someone would test + the first time then get retested again later only to still be +, they would still count it as a new case. The only people that said it was fake were left leaning media outlets such as NYT, Washington Post, and Vox.
