“Herd immunity” is not a strategy, it’s a scientific term describing
what happens when during a pandemic a certain percentage of the
population, has immunity, either from a vaccine or from infection, so
that exponential growth stops. For measles you need 98 percent immunity. For
COVID it’s ESTIMATED that 50-70 is necessary, but no one knows. There
is no certainty about either a vaccine or immunity after
infection. There are always 5 renegade scientists out of maybe
10,000 who will say anything, andTrump has found some like Scott
Atlas who push this idea of using herd immunity as a strategy.The idea
is “of course we will protect the vulnerable, but we’ll let the
healthy young people get infected”. This is impossible to
actually do, especially in Trump’s US. For instance, the community
spread went up in her town, after the university was opened (and then shut
again); as a result one person in the retirement community where Mom lives
got infected. As a result10 helpers (including the wonderful people who
help Mom) have to quarantine for 14 days. It’s almost inevitable when
there is community spread due to “herd immunity” being adopted that it
is impossible to protect the “vulnerable”. Expect millions of
deaths: say a 1 percent death rate of 300 million gives 3 million.
This is completely delusional, idealistic libertarian ideology that will get millions killed, now that (for political reasons) it’s Trump’s official policy.

Did you report this? The other day they said there was the first and only case of this happening in the US, which was in either Utah or Nevada I think. However, I’m almost certain I’ve heard this happening several times here in the US before this last one was reported [where they have worsened symptoms with the reinfection]
I heard an interview with a Floridian Trump rally event where a woman said she wasn’t worried becaue of herd immunity and she could barely pronounce it. Isn’t this illegal in any way??????

So, the trump administration has found a way to give a name, “herd immunity”, to the criminal neglect that has caused the death of well over 200,000 americans. There is a group of academics all ready and raring to go with this and they made “The Great Barrington Declaration”. It would not be far-fetched to think how convenient it is to have these academics declare, at this moment, that herd immunity is the way to go just to get trump “off the hook”. Their declaration makes many statements and none are backed with references. What they suggest will surely increase exponentially the number of people showing up at hospitals all over the country. At this moment, many Americans are following the CDC guidelines but look at the infection rate and death rate. Imagine what those numbers will look like if the whole of the population believes herd immunity is the way to go!

Natural Herd Immunity doesn’t exist for animals. You isolate sick livestock. If they survive you reintroduce them to the herd. Half of the world’s Saiga (Central Asian big-nosed gazelles) died in a matter of days because there is No Natural Herd Immunity — 200,000 Saiga died. I did a whole video on this topic last month.

@Philip Christiano Let’s see.
First you have to be convinced that herd immunity actually occurs for this virus. No one knows this for sure yet and their are other viruses where herd immunity doesn’t apply eg., the common cold which also is a coronavirus. We are now seeing cases of people who get infected for the second time, suggesting any immunity may only last a few months.
Second, you have to make some assumption about the % you need to infect to get herd immunity. Again no one knows whether it’s 40%, 60%, 80%. Obviously there’s a lot riding on how many people you need to infect – and how many will die – to get to herd immunity.
Third, you have to assume you can protect the vulnerable. There are 50 million of the over 65s in the US and about 95% of them live in regular communities, so living and mixing with the rest of the population who, by this strategy, you want to get infected as quickly as possible, so no masks, social distancing etc. Has anyone come up with a foolproof way to protect these 50 million? No? I thought so.
And finally, there doesn’t seem to be any consideration to those who get infected, survive but have permanent organ damage and that’s a pretty big number.
Other than these minor details it’s a pretty great strategy.
