How is it the the United States “doesn’t have the ability” to build a thousand room hospital? What he should have said is the United States doesn’t have the will to build a thousand room hospital unless there is some assurance it will always produce large profit margins.

@myko freder Interesting that you suggest isolating the most vulnerable instead of isolating those already infected. I infer that you think at some point soon, the infected public will far outnumber those most at risk from complications if infected. I first thought it sounded like you were willing to sacrifice general public health to save the weakest among us but after further consideration, there’s no telling how long it will take for proper testing to occur so assuming the vast majority is already infected might save the most lives in a “anti-Darwinistic” sort of way.

@Liza Tanzawa Neither will the hospital parking lot when they run out of beds. I suggest a mall because it’s already set up for use and the conversion (in emergency circumstances) should be relatively simple.
The amish are probably not even aware of whats going on.
Schools are empty. Could easily transform them into a hospital/triage complex with its rooms, showers, cafeterias, and large parking lots that can be used for drive thru testing areas for instance. All in one coronovirus centers.

@Duane Hall It was not a hospital. it was a hotel that was being used to house the less seriously ill patients.
The good thing is that many the banksters are on the older end of the spectrum – that end of the spectrum who are the most vulnerable to the virus. You could always hope that the virus carries a few of them off. At the very least, the banksters would not live to enjoy their wealth.

When I worked for the Army Corps of Engineers thirty years ago, they were capable of building a Styrofoam building (in a blizzard) in a couple of hours. These buildings last for decades, could hold a hundred hospital beds and connect with foam or tent hallways. That would be a creative solution.

Most cities have empty buildings that could be used.
Schools are empty.
Use the churches, most of those are empty now.
Stadiums and arenas in many major cities have plenty of covered space, parking lots, power and water. When it comes to it (and it will) we will need that space.
To staff it, we can bring in help from Latin America. They haven’t been hit as hard, and even if we ask for 100 doctors/nurses per country, we could rotate personnel, give the pros a fighting chance.
Bonus: brining in a bunch of foreign professionals may make Stephen Miller’s head explode.

There is no point in testing everybody! We already know the virus is here so the first thing to do is to prevent yourself from getting it. You could announce tomorrow that the local hospital will test everyone and you know what will happen? The first 50,000 people to show up will be all the hypochondriacs in town who DON’T EVEN FEEL SICK, who want to brag to their friends and neighbors that they were the first to get the test. I’ve been studying you hypochondriacs ever since I grew up reading Mad Magazine in the 1950’s.
Then the secondary problems begin. All the hypochondriacs will use up the test kits needed for sick people and for medical staff. And then there will be false positives. False positives will create new economic dislocations when healthy people are given the care that should be reserved for sick people. False positives will create new panic, fear, and even accidental death.

My daughter is in the UK and they have PODS outside the hospital to keep corona patients separated. We could use the schools here they are all closed.
Washington State is doing an amazing job dealing with these issues. They are using their local scientists and testing at UOW labs. The state bought a motel for people that are infected to stay. I wish we can build a hospital for only 10days or even 2 weeks.

@Liza Tanzawa If things were as you suggest, then hospitals would go up over-night in the U.S. because we wouldn’t have over-time laws or work limits etc, etc.
The fact is we’ve got books worth of laws to protect American workers. Some of our building codes probably don’t exist in China, and their government can cut through all the political red-tape a heck of a lot faster since it’s basically a dictatorship.
Also, China is run by billionaires and government. Literally. Some of the wealthiest people on earth are Chinese citizens and they own vast fortune and control the lives of millions of workers who are also forced (by the government in some cases) to work for these companies.
