Roseau, Dominica – January 16, 2008……………….. Minister for Community Development, Gender Affairs, Culture and Information, Hon. Loreen Bannis-Roberts has said that the Cross-has always been a significant symbol for the Christian world.
The Minister made the statement at the Reunion of the Cross activity at Morne Bruce on Sunday evening. The activity is one of many events planned in commemoration of Reunion Year in recognition of Dominica’s 30th anniversary of independence.
Speaking at the blessing and rededication of the Cross on Sunday evening, Hon. Bannis Roberts said, ” Christianity and the Cross are very much interconnected”.
” Christ the Saviour is our model for service and for His Example sought to go to the limit to display his love for us by dying on a cross. That form of death was considered the most humiliating and at the same time a very cruel manner of punishment. He bore this for the sins of the world. If we want to follow him, we also he told us, we must take up our Cross and follow him. In the course of our daily lives we meet many situations that are very much of the nature of a Cross…, ” Hon. Roberts stated.
Hon. Roberts, who spoke on behalf Prime Minister, Hon. Roosevelt Skerrit, told the hundreds gathered at Morne Bruce that in Reunion Year 2008, they should reflect on the Cross carried by Christ so that ” we Christians will be better equipped for the task of nationhood”.
” Let us ask the Lord to give us the strength and courage for the journey and as we reflect on His Cross, let us ask Him to help us forgive those who offend us and seek forgiveness of those we offend. That way the three R’s of our reunion year, Renaissance, Renewal and Reconciliation can find their full expression,” Hon. Loreen Bannis-Roberts concluded.
Reunion at the Cross was attended by members of the Christian community in Dominica.(Ends)
