When I was in Switzerland in 1984, an American with a cause wanted to let me know that in Switzerland if the economy was poor, and employment was a problem for Swiss people to find jobs, immigrants with lawful jobs would be told to leave. The Swiss gov would make them leave. His underlying argument was to get me to agree that in America those coming into our country from the southern border should be stopped. There had been a bad recession in America and so he made this argument. Today, I tend to believe that most and I mean most are coming to America to get away from awful situations. I would not be surprised if most are coming for employment opportunities that just don’t exist in their communities. Check the data on this. If most are the ones who are being persecuted, then, I would be more than happy to admit I am wrong about this. Those who are looking for employment and a better life are the immigrants Gov. Abbott complains most about but he doesn’t seem to be too specific about this. He objects to the disorganized manner that these immigrants are coming in. However, sometime, humanitarian needs of people looks ugly, and it doesn’t fit within the nice and neat communities that we have built for ourselves. Texas doesn’t want to see the ugliness. When Russia invaded Ukraine and millions travelled to the border towns in Poland and other border counties, Poles and others drove to the borders and found Ukrainians who needed a home and picked them up and drove them to their homes or to the homes of others and to transitional sites so that the refugees could be helped. In Przemysl, Poland, an abandoned Tesco was opened and in one week’s time, with agencies represented by multiple European counties, and even Japan, the United States and Korea it became a site where refugees could find medical aide, mental health counseling, food and shelter and a free transit on the railways to destinations all over Europe. Perhaps, we should think of these immigrants from south of the border and those from other places more as refugees to some degree rather than simply immigrants. The law is specific but sometimes when humanity requires it, doing the right thing is a conscious choice that must be made. Just think if you were in their shoes, but for the grace of G_d you are not, but if you were, how you would not just think about your circumstances but how you would survive.

Jake, I enjoy all of your newscasts and believe you do an excellent job. Please focus on the fact that it is Republican governors, Texas. Florida. That are sending busloads to Democratic metropolitan cities, Chicago, Denver, and others. Why doesn’t Lauren Boebert, a Colorado resident, stand against this and the destruction it is bringing to our state. Thousands of immigrants have been transported to Denver. In the middle of winter, without appropriate clothes. how can a governor of another state inflict, this type of responsibility onto a metropolitan city of a state he is not governor of? Obviously, there is no funding for this. The state of Colorado as well as Illinois are forced to distribute the bus loads of people that are arriving, scrambling to find clothing and a place to stay in the middle of winter. With some of the worst weather conditions in decades.

Our electric bills were raised in Texas because when our grid when down, during that winter storm, and we were days without electricity Ercot lost money. And they told us that was why. Tell me again how many people died in Texas during that storm?

I’m a hard core Democrat, always will be. I was born on the border. I have Native and Irish ancestors. Even with all that, I can’t disagree with Abbott’s assessment although I disagree with everything else he does.

He’s the “Texas Governor”, just to clarify that. Our country needs to resources to handle immigration. We don’t have that for the numbers we are seeing. Immigrants do all the work in this country because our kids are too lazy to do it and I worked my way through college doing LABOR for minimum wage. I applaud those who come to this country and do what our spoiled cell phone carrying lazy teenagers and 20 somethings won’t. I would ask Texas Gov. Abbott of these people he referred to as “dangerous and terrorist watch list” that have come across the border, how much damage have they caused to the people of the United States?
