NEW YORK, NY, Tues. June 9, 2009: After weeks swine flu clean, Caribbean nations have seen a spreading of the deadly influenza A(H1N1) infection.
The Dominican Republic leads the region with 44 reported cases and one death. It is followed by Jamaica with seven.
The Cayman Islands on Monday reported two cases as did Bermuda, Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago.
Cuba added a fifth case, a Canadian tourist, on Monday while Puerto Rico`s total remains at one.
Martinique on Sunday reported its first case while the Bahamas` and Dominica`s total remains at one.
Globally there are 25,288 cases and 139 deaths, according to the World Health Organization.
Influenza A (H1N1) is highly contagious. Persons are therefore being reminded that they need to take measures to protect themselves from any Influenza virus infection. These include frequent hand washing with soap and water, covering nose and mouth when sneezing or coughing, avoiding contact with infected persons and limiting intimate contact.
Persons with flu-like symptoms should visit their doctor, the nearest health center or hospital.
