STUDENT TOURISM AMBASSADORS CHARGED TO KEEP GRENADA, CARRIACOU AND PETITE MARTINIQUE PURE

St. George’s, Grenada – 20th November 2018 – It wasn’t the end of a year-long Tourism Awareness Campaign (TAC) but the beginning of a bright future for the students of the primary schools of Grenada as Tourism Ambassadors. That’s according to Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation Hon. Dr. Clarice Modeste-Curwen who was speaking at the official pinning ceremony held at the Spice Basket on Tuesday, November 20, 2018.
Students from several primary schools across the nation along with their teachers joined together at the conference center to recite the Tourism Pledge and receive their Tourism Ambassador pins and certificates after completing the Grenada Tourism Authority’s ‘Tourism and Me Booklet’, which was launched last year.
Several students spoke about the benefits of the Tourism & Me booklet which they studied this year and how they are better able to promote their country to visitors. One student representing the First Choice Junior School said, “I represented Grenada at the OECS Swimming Competition, and I told my Caribbean friends to visit Grenada’s famous Grand Anse Beach” while a student of the Grace Lutheran School said, “The thing I liked most about the book is where the tourists visit in Grenada. The places I want to go are zip lining, the Underwater Sculpture Park and the Seven Sisters Waterfall.
The team of the Grenada Tourism Authority was out in full force coordinating the activity which included welcome remarks from the CEO of the GTA, Patricia Maher, feature remarks from Hon. Clarice Modeste-Curwen, a poem recital from a student and the charismatic, kid-friendly mascot “Natasha”. Natasha is the main character in the booklet and the representative of Pure Grenada, the Spice of the Caribbean which is reflected on tourism signage, pins, and collateral.
Patricia Maher charged the young students to not take their beautiful country for granted, to keep up with the changes in Tourism as it relates to technology, trends, and competition, to think out of the box for careers and to up their game in service delivery.
Tourism Minister Modeste Curwen also urged the children to carry on Grenada’s legacy of warmth and friendliness. She said, “We are a warm and friendly people. We look forward to your beautiful smiles warming the hearts of our visitors and your fellow citizens as you try your best to be helpful and kind.”
The Minister further stated, “Your first pledge is to your environment. Our islands are beautiful, and we want to keep them that way. You have learned how to dispose of your litter properly, and I want you to continue to teach your friends, family, and citizens to care for the environment.”
Chairman of the GTA, Mrs. Brenda Hood, was on hand to assist with the distribution of pins and certificates to the talented, young students whose energy and enthusiasm for the prospects of Tourism was palpable.
Last week, the students of Carriacou and Petite Martinique were the first to take the pledge and receive their Tourism ambassador pins from Minister for Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs Hon. Kindra Mathurine Stewart. The event took place at the Carriacou Health Services Centre Conference Room.
