Money can be replaced – your life cannot. Calm down. This will not last forever. But closing small businesses whilst leaving big box stores and malls open is pure madness and discrimination. Small business owners should have a choice if they feel doing their job is worth risking their lives. Thing is, if you lose your mum or dad, they will not be able to earn a wage in the future.

I worked intensive care for years at several notable ICUs in Ontario. The ICUs are always at full capacity. The internal medicine doctors make sure of it. Full beds means full funding. The only thing that changes is the acuity but the beds are ALWAYS full!
@M.C. Murdoch I agree Ontario should have been better prepared. However, as someone who actually works at the macro level within a public health unit, simply citing population for context is an extremely narrow-minded perspective. I appreciate you’re not employed in the healthcare sector but believe me, it’s far more complicated than that. For example, trained personnel is a finite resource that takes YEARS to expand. It’s not like there has been a pool of unemployed respiratory specialists across disciplines waiting in the wings.

@Per Llyngrenn The ICUs are always always always kept full. Period. Even in Summertime years before this covid nonsense there were intubated patients in every ICU in Ontario.

All this reminds me of an old Star Trek TNG episode: “Hero Worship”.
The Enterprise kept getting hit with violent “waves” of energy. They kept increasing power to the shields to resist the impacts, at the same time, the severity of these impacts inexplicably kept increasing wave after wave. At one point they faced the biggest wave yet (presumed that it would tear the Enterprise apart), that’s when Data (the android) told the captain to drop the shields entirely. The 2nd officer quickly retorted “That’s suicide, Data!” At the very moment before impact, the captain deferred to his android science officer. They dropped the shields, and the wave energy dropped to almost nothing before hitting the Enterprise (with resulted in a gentle rocking).
Turns out the shield harmonics were having an exponential amplifying effect on these waves.
You must realize that all Star Treks are in the Science Fiction and Fantasy genres, right? Plus, shock waves and shields does not equal viruses. As Spock would say, “This is illogical.”

Id imagine its pretty difficult to fix an ill equipped system in the middle of the largest disaster of the century. Thats like asking why the government doesn’t fix anti-flooding infrastructure in the middle of a year long storm. What little attention they can give that particular problem is just immediately overwhelmed by the unprecedented influx of new patients. They should have strengthened it before, but obviously we can’t change that now. Ford’s approach to the economy certainly didn’t help things, either.
@Adam-Matic Gaming Ottawa has spent 240 Billion and counting on Covid. I think with a small fraction of that kind of money in a year a lot could have been accomplished. How long does it take to construct an ICU bed?
I can vouch that a Toronto hospital has overstock of respiratory therapy supplies that are not moving as well as a room full of ventilators sitting unused. Many of these machines are manufactured by C 0 V I D i e n, a company that has been around since 2007 if not earlier. Look it up without the spaces
