Trying to rationalize why the Article of impeachment failed has no bearing on what happened. Mitch McConnell and the Republican Senate told everybody at the onset that no matter what was presented:

there were 18 witnesses in the House hearings and their testimony was presented in the Senate. The House holds the trial, the senate is the jury. There were no new witnesses in the senate during the Clinton impeachment either.
