Eastern Ukraine is going through a process of russification, where native Ukrainians are evacuated (actually deported to interior of Russia) and they are replaced by loyal Russian settlers. Russia did this in the Baltic states where today Russians make up a significant minority.

knocking out critical infrastructure in Ukraine seems like it ties into this plan as well; those resettled Ukrainians will have an even less hospitable home to return to, which motivates them to perhaps stay in Russia for the time being, depending on how miserable their accommodations are or how difficult escape is of course. If they do manage to escape to Europe or elsewhere, they will be adding to the already rapidly increasing burden of refugees. Russia will pay dearly for this for many decades

And most Ukrainians came to Russia.

A small minority of people were (over several years of pro-Russian propaganda starting in 2008) responsive to Russian overtures, but Donbas and Crimea were already under control in 2014. So there was already a pro Russia enclave before this war.

I notice a lot of people do not talk a bout this or do not know a bout the Budapest Memorandum , which was signed in 1994 That is when Ukraine gave up all it’s nuclear weapons not just for the Independence of Ukraine , they were Independent in Aug /24/91 , Poland and Canada were the first Countries to recognize Ukraine’s Independance and Boris Yeltsin confirmed it on Vast Tv a Russian news program ( I am old and remember such things ) Officially the USSR was dissolved Dec/26/91. The Budapest Memorandum gave Ukraine SECURITY PROMISES when giving up the nuclear weapons …..Who do you ask is the guarantee Countries to protect Ukraine from an aggressor you ask ? The USA . The UK and sadly RUSSIA ! So now everyone should get the point of why we are sending all the equipment the Ukrainians need folks…Peace to all..
Not just that, Russia also violated the Helsinki Accords (1975) which is designed to “establish the inviolability of European frontiers, reject any use of force or intervention in internal affairs and urge the signatories to respect human rights.”
And Russia violated and destroyed the NATO-Russia Founding Act (1997) which gives NO LIMITS to NATO expansion.
Both were signed by Russian leaders at the time.
