Russia plans to leave ISS by 2024. Can it stay in orbit without them? | USA TODAY

Russia's withdrawal from the International Space Station would force NASA and partners to find new ways to keep the space station in orbit.

The announcement, by Yury Borisov, the newly appointed head of the Russian space agency Roscosmos, increased tensions between the U.S. and Russia that began when President Vladimir Putin ordered the Ukraine invasion on Feb. 24.

Borisov made the statement in a meeting with Putin. Robyn Gatens, NASA's director of the space station, said Russian officials have not officially notified NASA.
