Rushdie Decodes: Nationalists Can’t Survive Without Fake History | The Beat With Ari Melber | MSNBC

Outspoken author Salmon Rushdie joins MSNBC Chief Legal Correspondent, Ari Melber, to discuss his new book ‘Quichotte,’ a fictional reimagining of 'Don Quixote' in the Trump era. Rushdie slams Trump, and leaders from India and Britain for ‘inventing a mythology of a false past.’ Though Rushdie’s novel is fictional, he tackles many realities, including the opioid crisis, which he says reflects the ‘loneliness in America’ from people ‘living isolated lives, seeking succor.’

    1. @Mark Haddox There is no debate with Gorka. There is no debate with nuking hurricanes (Trump’s idea). There is no debate with biggots, fascists, nationalists and the like. We’re not going to debate human rights, human values, respect for one another and so on. Some things are not debatable. Those debates might have happened when we lived in caves. We already know (or should know) better now.

    2. @Eusunt Dac so you agree with me. The leftist ideology cant even win a debate against a bigot. Their arguments are so weak they have to insult and be dismissive of their political opponents. They have to deplatform, censor, and run away from debate. That is a religion not a political ideology. Think about it if someone believes the sky is red are you afraid to debate them? Do you have to silence them?

    1. LOL, ignore gang violence, broken cities and open borders. Good job numb nuts. The fat guy under a fatwa is a tool of the establishment.

  1. America is Frankenstein, and Trump is our monster! There will be mobs in the streets, with pitchforks and torches before the story is over! That prediction seams immanent!

    1. The future is chaotic just like the present and past.  This is prediction nonsense from narrow  minded fear without common sense about it.

    2. @John Hanks You obviously haven’t been listening to what Trump’s staunchest supporters have been spewing.

    1. @Sicklady Hey, if you take a break from drinking your own urine, this fat guy survived his Fatwa by hiding out in Canada and the US. He should pick up his ego and take a spin through dear Iran.

    2. I love you but please don’t do that thing Trump does where he capitalizes random words in a sentence.

    3. Yes. These people need putting back in their box. If they can’t be reached, at least let them not poison the minds of the next generation.

    4. @1247.cc does your username describe your cranial capacity or your motorcycle’s displacement? if your cranial capacity, then your brain probably rattles around like a pebble in a tin can. if it’s your bike’s displacement, Harleys aren’t famous for “cutting edge” tech or forward thinking.
how would you survive a fatwa against yourself? bravely as in “I regret that I have etc.” or hide out in a safe place?

  2. Those that aren’t allowed to observe life are doomed to commit it. Or you could just get off your perch and grab a shovel.

  3. Welcome to the Quantum Mechanical World. If there are 50 Million Insane Right Wing racist Americans, it is “inevitable” (By Accident) that one of them will become President with his Red Make America Great Again hat made in China.

    1. Mindful Drone I’ll just double down on my first comment, the lefties in here are the ones in love with communism, not Trump.

  4. When you inject an immoral, sociopathic, narcissistic, racist, compulsive liar with a lack of empathy as President you are introducing a toxic poison ☠️ into the halls of Government….the result can be paralysis, to a heavy hangover

    1. @1247.cc We all know that. “Butobama! Butobama!” Isn’t a defence against Trumplestiltskin and his disgusting behavior. As Chomsky said, all the US presidents in the last hundred years, with one exception, could be indicted as war criminals.

  5. Mr. Rushdie’s thinking always seems so concise.
All conservatives love to revise history to fit their present-day agendas. Some are now claiming the late, drunken Senator Joe McCarthy, R-WS) might have been correct.

    1. What does the drinking habits of McCarthy have to do with the participation of soviet concepts in the US. Wake up, sport.

  6. Uff! … interview so refreshing!…We need more bright interviews like this on the news before the toxicity of the Moron-in-Chief’s Twitter feed kills all our neurons.

  7. I disagree with Mr. Rushdie. We all live in a world of rules. The people who have cornered power and wealth are above the law. They can buy lawyers, the courts, law enforcement, everything. It is not a mystery. These kinds of people live separate and privileged lives and from primary school to death they have the money/power to cancel out what may be called the social contract. No mystery, just vast amounts of wealth.

  8. We’ll done Ari
Salman is the kind of secular free
Thinking humanist we need to have
A platform in this dark time we are facing
Sometimes I find my self looking for
A hero like Christopher Hitchens the true gate keepers of our time
Salman is one of those people
    Please keep giving them platforms
