After anti-monarchist protesters were arrested, Britons wonder about freedom of speech, the timing of the protests and what's next for the U.K.

Queen Elizabeth II's death has sparked widespread grief in the U.K., along with concerns that civil rights were undermined during brief crackdowns on protesters.
But amid an economic crisis and waning support for a monarchical system, when the queen's mourning period ends, some Britons think it's time to talk about the monarchy.
"A significant amount of appreciation in the U.K. for the monarchy wasn't necessarily for the institution. It was for the queen," said Paul Powlesland, 36, a lawyer who stood outside the Houses of Parliament on Monday with a blank piece of paper in his hand and said he was told he would be arrested if he wrote "Not my king" on it, a reference to his disapproval of King Charles III, who inherited the throne from his mother.
"Now that she's gone I think there's going to be a lot of people reassessing their relationship with the monarchy, especially as I think Charles is inherently less likable," he said.

@Kandy Axelrod In a specific sense, the concept of free speech generally does not exist as a fundamental right within the country. British citizens have a negative right to freedom of expression under the common law.
I know, I know, Article 10 of the Human Rights Act of 1998, which has several caveats.
The UK, BTW, is one of the few countries that *still* doesn’t have a codified constitution.
Of course the UK is not N Korea (I didn’t say that anyway), but it’s not Shangri-La either.

It’s a funeral. Imagine somebody protesting at the funeral of your grandmother, for what she represented. I can understand that somebody wants a Republic but the timing is wrong and there are other ways.

Those people are free to protest, but that doesn’t mean it’s all free to do what you want. It’s the UK, not the US. Different country, different rules. In the UK it depends how you set up your protest. If you are planning a march you have to tell the police what you are planning. The police can change some things. Otherwise it’s illegal and Section 5 of the Public Order Act 1986 UK provides that a person is guilty of a public order offence if:
– they use threatening or abusive words or behavior or DISORDELY BEHAVIOR.
– or display any writing, sign or other visible representation which is threatening or abusive.
The other statute that was recently amended is the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Act of 2022, which allows police to arrest protestors for “public nuisance”.
In the context of the period of mourning for Queen Elizabeth II, the wide terms used in this legislation (such as “nuisance” and “distress”) gives a lot of discretion to police to arrest protestors who they perceive to be upsetting others. For instance, a protestor who holds a placard saying “Not my king, abolish the monarchy” may be seen as likely to cause distress to others given the high sensitivities in the community during the period of mourning.
I certainly understand however there has to be a middle ground, not everyone is mourning the Queen especially if one has been directly or indirectly impacted the monarch colonialism. People have the right to protest and protest is most effective right here and now, and may I say that if protestors had organized and tried to get permission or permits it would have most likely been denied, for peace sake a lady’s mom funeral was canceled because of the poms and circumstances going on, so when should that lady protest, after the fact , why isn’t she and her family not being considered, they too are mourning. People have the right to say or write long live the king and it may be just as offensive to some as it may be when someone writes he is not my king.
