Despite claims by both President Trump and his Attorney General, the Special Counsel’s report did NOT exonerate the President. You only believe the President because you never bothered to read the report itself. Part 1 of the report lists numerous PROVEN instances of collusion between Trump’s Election Campaign and Russian entities close to or part of Putin’s regime.
What the report did not do is specifically claim the collusion amounted to a CRIMINAL conspiracy.
Collusion is not a legal definition of a crime. Conspiracy is. The Trump Campaign DEFINITELY colluded with Russian entities. But the investigation could not prove that any of the collusion incidents amounted to evidence of actual criminal conspiracy.
Why not? Because proving criminal conspiracy sets a VERY high bar. Evidence of simple collusion is not enough. Criminal conspiracy, in these particular circumstances, would constitute actual treason. A crime that still carries the death penalty in the US.
If Mueller had found evidence criminal conspiracy, that would have resulted in the President and many on his campaign staff being put on trial for treason.
That’s why Mueller tried to transfer the results of his inquiry to Congress. Congress is the proper venue to charge collusion, because it comes under the definition of ‘High Crimes and Misdemeanors’ as outlined in the Constitution itself.
The Attorney General of the United States, together with the President and his administration, are attempting to thwart that basic Constitutional system by refusing to allow Congress access to the necessary documents and witnesses required to complete the investigations.
You may agree with that strategy. But it sets a dangerous precedent. Future presidents (Republican AND Democrat) will almost certainly continue this behavior and expand on it further, which undermines the whole system (the checks and balances, the proper separation of powers) that the Founding Fathers worked so hard to build.
A system that has proved robust for well over two hundred years is now under serious threat. But I guess you don’t care about that kind of thing.
