Steve: erm, errr, hmm, oh it’s got fins doesn’t it.
It was named for its dorsal fin (not all its fins). They used to mainly hunt species without prominent dorsal fins (e.g. bowhead, right, gray, humpback). So any species with one was simply called a “finback”. It was applied to several different species (including fin, sei, etc). After the advent of modern whaling other “finbacks” got common names (e.g. minke, Bryde’s) so now it’s only applied to B. physalus (fin whales).
