The prime minister of Dominica has declared a disaster zone around the area where heavy rain knocked out an earthen dam and caused severe flooding in the Caribbean island.
Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit says the collapse of the Matthieu dam destroyed part of a bridge, damaged buildings and flooded farms. He estimated the damage to the bridge over the Layou River at more than $3 million.
Skerrit tells reporters he has asked the U.S. and French governments to help assess the extent of the damage. No one was killed when the dam burst before dawn Thursday.
