On the North Coast of Jamaica, nestled between the blue crystal waters of the Caribbean Sea and the greens of the mountains sits the lush, secluded plantation known as the Prospect Outback Adventures.  It is managed and operated by Dolphin Cove Limited since 2005, which has introduced the Segway tour into its many adventures.

“A Segway is a clean, green, eco-friendly machine which has become the next generation personal mobility tool,” boasted Andrew, Tour Guide of the Plantation. “Stepping on to your Segway will give you a glimpse into the future; you feel as though this intelligent machine is actually reading your mind, taking you in any direction your touch guides it.” Prospect adventure posted on its website. www.prospectoutbackadventures.com .

“The Segway tour takes guests on a trip that explores both the cultural and natural sides of this remote part of the island,” Martin Johnson, another Tour guide pointed out.

Guided by this next generation machine which actually sets Prospect Plantation above many others, you are lead along a path surrounded by wooded forest, trees and plants that all were planted by former politicians and other notable public figures. It is said that many of these plants, herbs and spices possess some medicinal value and are still used today by many for a variety of ailments. These include the coconut for its healthy detoxing water; oil for cooking and treatment of acid reflux, peppermint used for tea and pimento for its oil and as allspice.

The Segway smoothly and effortlessly leads you over hilly terrains, valleys and low land areas to its first stop of the tour, that of the Prospect Plantation’s non-denominational chapel. An old, but well maintained building which was constructed entirely of stone and hardwood harvested from the same plantation by Sir Harold Mitchell in 1970.

“Secluded, private, clean, and romantic are words used to describe this chapel. It is a perfect location for a wedding.” Jamilee Farquharson, a visiting guest from St. Elizabeth described the location. This chapel is said to hold up to 120guests seated inside and 80 seated in the wings.

Mounted back onto our Segways, the next stop leads us uphill, passed camels and a variety of plants and trees such as mango trees and pineapple plants to the great house, originally built as a fort and later renovated into a home. Perched on a high raised hill at the heart of Prospect Plantation, it overlooks much of the estate and has an extraordinary view of the Caribbean Sea and green, lush well preserved gardens.

Dismounted from your comfortable, personal mobile Segway, one marvels at the beautiful flora that makes these gardens so breath-taking.  Lead back downhill on the new generation mobility tool, we embark on the camel safari, Jamaica’s first and only Camel Trekking Safari Experience. During this tour one is not only entertained by these camels, but also educated by the camel caretakers, who introduce the rider to their travel companion.

Prospect plantation is located approximately 10 minutes from the town of Ocho Rios, St Ann. It is an agricultural property with a host of plants, fruits, spices, crops and different animals such as camels, ostriches, peacocks, horses, and parrots. Powered by a team of passionate employees, the award winning plantation embraces authentic tours, and exotic Jamaican cuisines that expose visitors to different cultures, landscapes and wildlife. Whatever age, interest, ability or budget, Prospect Plantation provides a genuine life-changing experience.
