On Tuesday 30th September, thirty (30) trainees will receive certificates for having successfully completed a series of short courses at professional institutions in the United Kingdom, Barbados and Jamaica. The training was part of a programme to upgrade and improve the Human Resource component of the air access improvement programme being carried out by Government at the Melville Hall airport.
The thirty recipients will include sixteen fire officers, ten plant quarantine officers, four meteorological officers and one air traffic controller. The periods of training ranged from two weeks to one year and was financed by the Government of the Commonwealth of Dominica from resources of the European Commission under the 9th EDF CRIP Programme Estimate for the Dominica Air Access Improvement Programme (DAAIP).
Under the air access improvement programme, night landing will be introduced. The E.C. $100 million project will see the introduction of best international practice in airport security, fire and rescue operations, plant and animal quarantine, meteorological services, and air traffic control. The training was designed to equip the selected airport and port functionaries with the knowledge and skills for enhancing performance at the improved Melville Hall airport.
The presentation ceremony will take place at the Fort Young Hotel from 5.00 p.m. Addresses will be heard from government ministers and the Head of Delegation of the European Commission to Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean.
