POLITICAL EARTHQUAKE IN DOMINICA AS DOMINICA LABOUR PARTY SECURES LANDSLIDE VICTORY IN GENERAL ELECTION
The UWP loss is cataclysmic; Labour’s victory historic
Such was the scale of the political earthquake that the Leader of the United Workers Party, Mr. Ronald Green, Leader of the Dominica Freedom Party, Mrs. Judith Pestaina and Leader of the People’s Democratic Movement, Dr. William Riviere were among the casualties of the most extraordinary political landslide in Dominica’s recent history.
Hon. Roosevelt Skerrit’s crushing triumph eclipses the seventeen(17) seats secured by Miss Mary Eugenia Charles and the Dominica Freedom Party in the July 21st 1980 General Elections.
The Dominica Labour Party candidates significantly increased their majorities in several of the constituencies they had previously held. The D.L.P won the Roseau Valley seat for the first time since 1975. The Dominica Labour Party candidate, Mr. Alvin Bernard came within a whisker (three votes) of capturing the Roseau Central seat.
Hon. Roosevelt Skerrit, 37, will be sworn in as Prime Minister later today at the Office of the President at Morne Bruce.
