@Ashley S It’s a sad indictment of your country that so many of you are prepared to accept this a good enough. The gun violence is shameful for a developed country and reflects badly on everyone, so it really is everyone’s business.
People minding their own business being the victims of a mass shooting. First responders putting themselves in harms way because of a mass shooter. Steps should be taken to protect both people and the responders. We know what they are.

I lived in Philly and I’m shocked this doesn’t happen every night. So many crimes don’t even get reported but here in America we love to allow criminals to walk the streets.

We’re talking about innocent people being shot by ordinary people who are in no way connected with gangs or gang violence. Granted, SOME innocent people have been killed by gangs especially in drive by shootings, but they were never the target. They were just in the way, sadly.

@acgillespie So those are two completely separate thoughts. I do agree that this is a systematic issue. However, its been in play for way longer than 30yrs. I don’t agree that nothing can be done. It’s not likely to change and so in that essence, it’s not likely going to happen. Especially with the direction of current policy. It could change, and improve. It would take years, and effort. That I don’t see our backward steps taking at the moment.
@Anthony thats all well and good and I agree but this is a long term democratic controlled city. There is funding, and it all goes to other BS… then where exactly do your prioritize this situation alongside the drug epidemic there ? Ignore that and it will get worse and situations like these will get worse. Even if you start today you are talking about decades to make any progress. Gangs are entrenched. They prefer that way of life. Many of them don’t want social programs.
@Sylvan Of course it would take years to fix, that’s not a reason to do nothing. It takes months to years to build a building, but it can only take hours or days to tear one down. Improving one’s self or environment always takes longer than it took to get to that situation. You probably have to pick a starting point like the youth (elementary age) to actually affect change. As everyone older is already in their paths, and would need to want the change. You have to provide hope, a future for them to succeed in. I’m not going to sit here and act like I know how to fix it, but over my 30+ years. I’ve seen how to make things worse. All I know is that with this current direction we are in. It’s only going to get worse. I don’t have a lot of hope with our capitalist republic that we live in. Nothing happens unless there is a possible profit involved. Social services are almost always an expense, and is the reason why it’s always one of the first things cut.
So we do agree. However, I choose to aim for the best possibility, and maybe we will get close. It could be a dream, or maybe I’m just idealistic. But the entire country saying that “this is just how it is.” Seems like a pretty shitty outlook, that I don’t want to be involved with. I would rather try something, instead of nothing while we all argue over the best of 2 horrible options.
Shouldve used the first round on HIMSELF, and spared us the grief; nothing can be more dishonorable than preying on unarmed civilians.

Well, why were all those civilians unarmed? Sadly, only 30% of Americans own firearms. And most of them don t seem to carry them. Hundreds of people and only the police shot back. It is a disgrace.

Thank you for removing politics from gun violence to allow truth to flow, and empowerring people to think about reality.
There are 30,000 gun related deaths per year by firearms, and this number is not disputed. U.S. population 324,059,091 as of Wednesday, June 22, 2016. Do the math: 0.00925% of the population dies from gun related actions each year. Statistically speaking, this is insignificant! What is never told, however, is a breakdown of those 30,000 deaths, to put them in perspective as compared to other causes of death:
• 65% of those deaths are by suicide which would never be prevented by gun laws
• 15% are by law enforcement in the line of duty and justified
• 17% are through criminal activity, gang and drug related or mentally ill persons – gun violence
• 3% are accidental discharge deaths
So technically, “gun violence” is not 30,000 annually, but drops to 5,100. Still too many? Well, first, how are those deaths spanned across the nation?
• 480 homicides (9.4%) were in Chicago
• 344 homicides (6.7%) were in Baltimore
• 333 homicides (6.5%) were in Detroit
• 119 homicides (2.3%) were in Washington D.C. (a 54% increase over prior years)
So basically, 25% of all gun crime happens in just 4 cities. All 4 of those cities have strict gun laws, so it is not the lack of law that is the root cause.
This basically leaves 3,825 for the entire rest of the nation, or about 75 deaths per state. That is an average because some States have much higher rates than others. For example, California had 1,169 and Alabama had 1.
Now, who has the strictest gun laws by far? California, of course, but understand, so it is not guns causing this. It is a crime rate spawned by the number of criminal persons residing in those cities and states. So if all cities and states are not created equally, then there must be something other than the tool causing the gun deaths.
Are 5,100 deaths per year horrific? How about in comparison to other deaths? All death is sad and especially so when it is in the commission of a crime but that is the nature of crime. Robbery, death, rape, assault all is done by criminals and thinking that criminals will obey laws is ludicrous. That’s why they are criminals.
But what about other deaths each year?
• 40,000+ die from a drug overdose–THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR THAT!
• 36,000 people die per year from the flu, far exceeding the criminal gun deaths
• 34,000 people die per year in traffic fatalities(exceeding gun deaths even if you include suicide)
Now it gets good:
• 200,000+ people die each year (and growing) from preventable medical errors. You are safer in Chicago than when you are in a hospital!
• 710,000 people die per year from heart disease. It’s time to stop the double cheeseburgers! So what is the point? If Obama and the anti-gun movement focused their attention on heart disease, even a 10% decrease in cardiac deaths would save twice the number of lives annually of all gun-related deaths (including suicide, law enforcement, etc.). A 10% reduction in medical errors would be 66% of the total gun deaths or 4 times the number of criminal homicides……Simple, easily preventable 10% reductions!
So you have to ask yourself, in the grand scheme of things, why the focus on guns? It’s pretty simple.:
Taking away guns gives control to governments.
The founders of this nation knew that regardless of the form of government, those in power may become corrupt and seek to rule as the British did by trying to disarm the populace of the colonies. It is not difficult to understand that a disarmed populace is a controlled populace.

To begin, this post is not meant to be a disparaging comment on the U.S. and the people that live there. I’m simply providing information that show that the U.S. could return to actually being #1 but there is a lot of work for you to do. Those of us looking at the U.S. generally shake our head when we see masses of American’s shouting “We’re Number One” when the truth indicates otherwise.
According to the Legatum Prosperity Index for 2021 here is how the U.S. ranks in 13 key areas:
Safety & Security 69th, Personal Freedom 22nd, Governance 23rd, Social Capital 13th, Investment Environment 15th, Enterprise Conditions 4th, Infrastructure & Market Access 4th, Economic Quality 16th, Living Conditions 27th, Health 68th, Education 20th, Natural Environment 23rd
For total gun deaths in 2019 – Brazil was first with 49,436 and U.S. was 2nd 37,038; however the numbers keep trending up for the U.S. with the exception of 2020 which was only lower because of Covid.
I think the citizens of the U.S. really need to make a concerted effort to elect people that truly have the best interest of the majority of Americans.

@userid00 00 50 people were shot dead in a church in Nigeria yesterday! A conservative killed 67 social democratic teenagers in Norway about a decade ago. It is not only the USA that has a gun violence problem.
Those events are unavoidable in a free society. Put it into perspective and you will realise that many more people die from other reasons such as car crashes. Five people died in a train crash in Germany yesterday. Should Germans stop using trains?
After all the mass shootings lately, I was expecting at least a little shift in the rhetoric, but no, the same old deflections and justifications. There’s probably nothing you can say to a committed gun owner. They love their guns to the exclusion of anything else, including their empathy and humanity.

I live in a suburb 20 miles from where this took place. We don’t have or need a full time police force, I don’t lock my doors, everyone has guns. Crime is almost non existent. Zero murders, zero shootings in the 21 years I’ve lived here.
