Prime Minister’s Address to the Nation

My fellow Dominicans,

The brilliant statesman, Otto von Bismarck, once said “man cannot create the current of events; he can only float with it and steer”. When in May 2005 you reaffirmed your confidence in the Dominica Labour Party to continue to steer our country to a brighter future, I promised you leadership that would be responsible and would always act in your best interests.

Since then, there has been a gathering current of challenges, imposed by developments at the global and regional levels and even by nature itself. Small vulnerable states like ours are being challenged to be bold, adaptive and innovative in order to survive, and to provide their citizens with the opportunity for a reasonable standard of living.

In my Budget Address last year, I shared with you some elements of our Growth and Social Protection Strategy. This strategy provides the frame for going forward with economic growth and poverty reduction programmes, while ensuring respect for economic fundamentals. I emphasized that ignoring these fundamentals would lead us back along the slippery slope to crisis and chaos. In my concluding remarks, I re-affirmed Government’s commitment to striving in concrete ways towards making our country a better place – a place where our people can have the opportunity to contribute to improving the quality of their lives.

Roseau, Dominica – February 6, 2008………… Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, Hon. Matthew Walter has reiterated Government’s commitment to the agricultural sector in Dominica.

 

The Minister gave that commitment to farmers along the West Coast during a tour of their farms recently. The Minister visited farmers at Milton, Syndicate and Grand Savanne, his third visit to farmers’ holdings in different parts of the country since his appointment as Minister for Agriculture in October, 2007.

 

At a Town Hall Meeting in Coulibistrie at the end of the farm visits, Hon. Matthew Walter outlined the significant financial resources being invested in the sector.

Roseau, Dominica – January 15, 2008……………….. Preparations are in high gear for the hosting of the 46^th Meeting of the OECS Authority in Roseau, Dominica from January 17-18, 2008, with deeper economic integration in the sub- region high on the agenda. The Meeting will be chaired by Chairman of the OECS Authority, Dominica’s Prime Minister, Hon. Roosevelt Skerrit.

 

The Meeting will be preceded by an opening ceremony on the evening of Wednesday, January 16, 2008 at the Fort Young Hotel.

 

The 46^th meeting of the OECS Authority precedes the launch of a major public consultation exercise on the Draft Economic Union Treaty for the OECS. The Meeting will discuss a plan of action for the exercise and confirm the role of the Heads of Government who have indicated their intention to take the lead in mobilizing region-wide commitment to and support for this new phase in the deepening of OECS integration.
