Roosevelt Skerrit reminded the large gathering of invited guests and well-wishers of the vision of the late Roosevelt Douglas for a closer relationship between Dominica and Guadeloupe and Martinique, and even membership of the European Union.

Bahamas gears up to address climate change – the flat islands could become unlivable due to sea leve

Nassau, Bahamas. March 9, 2009, (Panos)The Bahamas government is moving to put measures in place to help the extremely vulnerable islands adjust to what one government official calls a possible ‘death sentence for small islands.’ 

Mr. Phillip Weech, Director of the Bahamas Environmental Science and Technology Commission, said that the government was working on an energy policy, exploring alternative sources of energy as well as more sustainable tourism options in a bid to prepare the over 700 islands for the possible effects of climate change.

SKERRIT SPEAKS OF STRIDES THAT HAVE BEEN MADE IN EDUCATION AND ROAD INFRASTRUCTURE AT TOWN HALL M

Roosevelt Skerrit addressed a Town Hall Meeting in the village of Thibaud in late December where he outlined the tremendous strides that have been made by his Government over the last several years, especially with respect to education and road infrastructure in the Vieille Case constituency.

 

According, Hon. Skerrit, who is also Parliamentary Representative for  the area  significant strides have been made in education, where many young persons from that part of the country  are being  granted opportunities to empower themselves irrespective of political or religious affiliation or socio-economic circumstances. Reference was made to the fact that there are countries in the world far richer than Dominica where children will not see a primary school let alone a secondary school.

Dr. Etienne returns home to deliver lecture on Health in 21st Century Dominica

Dominican Dr. Carissa Etienne who has risen to great heights on the international stage, first with the Pan-American Health Organisation (PAHO) and now the World Health Organisation (WHO) as its Assistant Director-General, has highlighted the major global challenges facing the health sector in developing countries like Dominica.

 

Dr. Etienne, one of the pioneers of the primary health care programme in Dominica in the 1980s, delivered a lecture on Health in 21st Century Dominica at the Fort Young Hotel in Roseau last week. It was the fourth lecture in a series of lectures under the auspices of the National Reunion Committee.

Dominica and the European Commission to sign the 10th EDF Country Strategy Paper

The Government of Dominica and the European Commission (EC) will this week sign the Country Strategy Paper which provides a framework for EC assistance programmes in Dominica under the 10th European Development Fund for the period 2008 to 2013.

In his Address to the Nation at the Parade of Uniformed Groups on November 3rd 2008, the Prime Minister said that at the national level, “the new thrust must be based on maintaining platforms of energy, agriculture, tourism and enhanced citizenship“.

Speaking at the Media launch of the event at the Fort Young Hotel, Hon. Douglas expressed confidence that the package put together for this year’s festival by the new Dominica Festivals Committee would appeal to patrons at home and abroad.
