Roseau, Dominica – March 19, 2008……. With the price of crude oil at a savarin_and_mondesire_at_geothermal_project_launch.jpgstaggering US $109 a barrel and rising, Dominica’s Minister for Energy, Hon. Charles Savarin believes that “what oil and natural gas have done for Petroleum exporting countries, geothermal energy can do for Dominica”.

 

Hon. Charles Savarin made that announcement recently at the Media Launch of a project entitled,” Preparation of a Geothermal-based Cross-Border Electrical Interconnection in the Caribbean”.

 

The Minister stated further that “potentially the development of the geothermal resources of Dominica could become the single most important economic activity on the island for decades to come”.

High Court Judge Davidson Baptiste has ruled in favour of the Speaker of the House of Assembly, the Sergeant at Arms and the Attorney General in a motion brought by six Opposition parliamentarians after they had been escorted out of Parliament on January 8, 2007 following a period of disorder in the House arising out of her decision to alter two of their questions on the Order Paper.

 

In a twenty-eight (28) page judgement Justice Davidson Baptiste stated among other things:

PRIME MINISTER SKERRIT IN BAHAMAS FOR CARICOM 19th INTER-SESSIONAL MEETING

Roosevelt Skerrit left the State yesterday for The Bahamas to attend the  Nineteenth(19) Inter-Sessional Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of the  CARICOM Community,(CARICOM).

 

Prior to the CARICOM Inter-Sessional Meeting on March 7 and 8, 2008, Hon. Roosevelt Skerrit, who is also the Minister for Finance, will attend a meeting of the Council of Finance and Planning (COFAP).

 

The major issues to be discussed by the CARICOM Heads include the rising cost of living, security issues and the status of external trade negotiations including the establishment of an Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) with the European Commission.

PRIME MINISTER SKERRIT PLEDGES $2 MILLION AS CABRITS HERITAGE AND ECOLOGY CENTRE IS LAUNCHED

Roseau, Dominica – February 25, 2008……… Prime Minister, Hon. Roosevelt Skerrit has chec_cheque_by_pm_skerrit_feb_2008.jpgpledged Government’s commitment to the completion of the restoration work at the Cabrits National Park in Portsmouth by making a financial contribution towards the establishment of The Cabrits Heritage and Ecology Centre (CHEC).

 

At a brief ceremony at the Cabrits recently, the Prime Minister presented a cheque for $250,000 to Dr. Lennox Honychurch, representing the first instalment of an amount of $2 million needed to establish the Centre at the Cabrits designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage site.

PROGRESS ON THE WAITUKUBULI NATIONAL TRAIL PROJECT

Roseau, Dominica – February 21, 2008………Progress is being made in the implementation of the $14 Million ECD Waitukubuli National Trail Project (WNTP).

 

acting_agriculture_minister_timothy_walks_part_of_the_trail.jpgLast Friday, a group led by the then acting Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, Hon. Julius Timothy,  visited one of the 14 segments that will form part of the Waitukubuil National Trail.

 

A series of training programmes in Trail Construction and Maintenance and Vegetation Management have taken place in recent weeks. The group was able to witness one of the training sessions which took place in the vicinity of the Emerald Pool Eco-Tourist site and ran from Tuesday, February 12, 2008 to Saturday February 16, 2008.
