O’Rourke, Abbott battle over gun laws in Texas as race heats up | USA TODAY

Gun laws are proving to be a prominent issue in the Texas gubernatorial race between Republican Greg Abbott and Democrat Beto O'Rourke.

The race has drawn national attention for O'Rourke, who ran a close senatorial race against Republican Sen. Ted Cruz in 2018 and a brief presidential run in 2020. O'Rourke's name recognition and firebrand personality have Democrats hopeful he can flip the governor's mansion.

Based on recent polling, the race is headed for the closest margin a Texas gubernatorial election has seen in more than 20 years. But with Abbott consistently leading O’Rourke by 5 or more percentage points in multiple polls, the debate carries very different stakes for the two candidates.

The race is one of several gubernatorial contests attracting national attention where issues such as abortion, border politics and a flagging economy socked by high inflation have brought federal issues into state campaigns.

  1. Beto; Hell yeah we are coming after your guns.
Beto; Well not me, but I’ll send men with guns to take them

  2. We as Texans don’t want stricter gun laws, those people who do are not Texans do, their just residents of Texas

    1. U JUST SET THE TRUTH ON 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥MUCH RESPECT FROM GEORGIA!!!!!

  3. The problem is anti gunners don’t have basic gun knowledge. How can one speak about something they’re not educated on?

  4. The Bill of Rights to the US Constitution doesn’t give the people the right to murder. The Bill of Rights gives the people the right to defense against murder!

    1. It’s a birthright and a human right. The constitution can be changed, especially by a tyrannical govt.

    2. @The Orange Anchor NOT ON MY WATCH!!!! NOT IF WE THE PEOPLE STAND OUR GROUND!!!!!! N THAT I WILL DO…COME HELL R HIGH WATER!!!! U CAN BET YO BOTTOM $!!!!!OUT OF MY COLD!!!! DEAD!!!!HANDS!!!!! ONLY WAY!!!!!

    3. @Dawn Fuller
Not towing either party line and putting swindler criminals in office. Just a matter of time.

    1. You can’t predict what people will do. And you won’t be able to keep criminals from getting weapons. An armed public is the best the detterant.

    2. @The Orange Anchor that’s been proven wrong countless times. I mean damn y’all just had a school shooting in uvalde. We need stricter gun control.

  5. It was during his bid for president that O’Rourke said “Hell yes, we’re going to take your AR-15, your AK-47.

  6. Guns save lives. It’s not our fault most people are to scared to use them for the means our laws designed them to be. Not to mention our failing protection system that is our law agency.

  7. Latino voter , Pro Second Amendment Pro Abbott. Francis O’Rourke is not a Latino or a Texan.

  8. Tell me, if you can, in what state where “Common sense gun control” laws actually exist, has it decreased the number of violent murders and other crimes committed by people with illegally obtained firearms? The criminals don’t care what laws we put into place. In fact, they would prefer to operate with an unarmed society that won’t challenge them with guns of their own. A criminal can get away with their crimes, knowing that the people can’t defend against them. This is why the crime rates in the democratically run cities are much higher than in republican ran cities. Read any early commentary on the second amendment written by the founding fathers or the early Supreme Court Justices of that era. They believed in an armed society, and for good reason.

  9. Having the first name called Beto itself should be an immediate disqualification for a governor job lol
