In two crucial Senate debates, party politics took center stage. CNN's Omar Jimenez reports on the spirited debates between Utah Republican Sen. Mike Lee and his independent challenger Evan McMullin and the Ohio Senate debate between Democrat Tim Ryan and Republican J.D. Vance. Then, CNN's David Chalian breaks down the biggest moments. #CNN #News

Don’t forget to not just listen to their words but look how they have voted and what bills they voted for to see their actions. This goes for BOTH sides
@Georgie it’s your right if you want to vote for a dictator.
I won’t.
@P. Scott there’s an element of that what do you suggesting and uprising
@wouldn’t you like to know what makes you think he is a dictator.. explain.. he didn’t force anyone to get the shot or lose their job🤷♂️.. THAT sounds like a dictator..but do explain why you think Trump is a dictator.. I’m waiting
Good point!
Will we ever get back a system of elections that is NOT graded by “How much Money” they spend? Lets rid ourselves of the money and vote for the candidate. I HATE that I have to watch all the attack ads, even though I have cast my ballot already.
It’s called “citizens United” since you asked.
The problem is that there are a lot of voters out there who don’t do much else besides watch their favorite TV shows, and those people can be influenced by how often political ads run. If they see an ad that claims Tim Ryan is helping Biden recruit 76,000 IRS Agents to come and audit you (I see those against Beasley in NC, who isn’t even in office yet…), they might believe it and vote for JD Vance instead, even though the attack ad is 100% false. Why? Those viewers may never bother to see the fact checking of those ads that proves they’re utter garbage.
Even on YouTube, I end up with the same problem you do, where I keep seeing those Ted Budd ads that attack Cheri Beasley, even though I wear around a Cheri Beasley shirt! I’ve tried reporting those ads to YouTube for being false and misleading, but they likely can’t just delete those ads after accepting all that political money to show them to viewers.
The GOP wants to cut Social Security. Some of them want to ditch it entirely. Do you want impoverished mom and dad to move in with you?
Wait… He’s the “father of bi-racial children”? What a way to describe them, and say nothing about the woman responsible for their “bi-racialness”? Is she mono-racial?
@Harold Lost bigly.
“…I believe in this document written by the hands of wise men raised up by god to that very purpose…”
God isn’t a registered voter. He isn’t even a citizen.
Dude lets both parties win elections. Makes me think which side is he really on ?
Sky daddy is not real
I hope Ryan wins!
We need fewer Mike Lees and more Evan McMullins in politics.
Even Romney wants McMuffin. He needs him to help with his democrat voting.
JD would service trump on stage if he thought it would get him votes.
Uh what kind of service you talking about here?
@Andre Barrett Lip service, if you know what I’m saying to you…
@Andre Barrett Stormy Daniels style
@Andre Barrett – no one is that daft.
Someone is in trouble. Sorry, Mike Lee.
Mr Lee needs to go. He betrayed his oath of office and kissed DJT. I live in Utah and will not vote for Lee.
Can at least one person quoting this line “as someone from Utah, I’m voting for McMullin” please explain why without mentioning Mike Lee?
Go ahead, I’ll wait.
If I lived in Utah, I’d vote for McMuffin.
Can at least one person repeating the phrase approximating “as someone from Utah, I’m voting for McMullin” please explain why without mentioning Mike Lee?
Go ahead, I’ll wait.
A politician. Not a meal from McDonald’s.
Suddenly I’m hungry for McDonald’s🤔🤔🤔 not sure why
A breakfast burritos illegal in Utah ?
McMuffin, with egg on his face and a sausage in his buns
I’m sick and tired of struggling to pay bills and these people spend millions to lie to everyone. This is ridiculous.
It’s a double edge sword.
Imagine Se. Lee in black and white, sweating as he orates – spitting image of Joe McCarthy
Black and white like a skunk?
it was a shimmering patina of salty secretions. world class drippiness.
I think all candidates should have to take questions from everyday common people during these debates and they should not be allowed to professionally answer they should have to answer on a human and personal level just like walking up and shaking hands and meeting somebody at a grocery store in other words tell the truth like for instance that stupid judge who’s not an ologist that was a very professional answer in a room full of lawyers and judges but was a very ridiculous answer to a real person
Voting Republican will never lower inflation. It will only make it worse ! VOTE BLUE IN 22 AMERICA ! HELP SAVE DEMOCRACY !
Jean ! How dare you be…….absolutely correct ! History and facts, back you up ! Go vote! And take five people with you !
Utah is surprisingly competitive this will be an interesting race to watch.
Utah, like many sparsely populated states, has had an influx of retirees, tech workers, and other folks cashing out of homes on the coasts. As newcomers, they typically don’t put out political signs on their lawns to advertise their political leanings. But they do make sure to vote, partly to see how outnumbered they are or are not, and figuring out when they might reach a critical mass where making a push might actually work. There is a big psychological difference between thinking that 75% of your neighbors are diametrically opposed to you politically, versus 55%. That’s around the point where a slight majority is still complacent, while a slight minority can pull off a surprise by getting out their vote.
It’s only because the Democratic Party didn’t nominate someone for the senate race against Mike Lee, so now the GOP’s usual “he’s a Democrat, he’s bad” strategy doesn’t work.
I don’t know why Mike Lee even participates in the debates since he sees no reason for democracy.
Tim Ryan 🇺🇸‼️💯
Debates allow opportunity for quick thinking and speaking.
To self-govern we have to verbally wrestle the ideas in real-time.
The benefit is not for the candidates but for those who exert the
effort to listen to both sides and watch it live.
Well said
Yeah they’re treating em like rap battles these days smh
Mike Lee’s only distinction is his membership in the GOP. He’s running to contribute one sitting Senator to the GOP body count. Lee makes that point again and again throughout this debate.
I pray Tim Ryan and The Independent in Utah wins.
