I am from the “White Swan” area of Yakima Washington . And part of my family were early settlers in this part of the then Oregon Territories.
Ulysses Grant was stationed in White Swan before the Civil War .
I would like to know if there is any history about his life and activities while he was billeted there .
I remember hearing about a skirmish with the “Yakima’s” over the deaths of some settlers (the “Sawyers? or the Parker’s?”)
Was this why Grant was stationed there ? And what was the relationship between the Yakima People and Grant ?
I understand that he was also known for smoking the local hemp while billited up in the then Oregon Territories.
Maybe there are some Yakima People who can fill this in ? Appreciated ! Thanks.

I hope its a good story, and not dumbed down for a mass audience…his autobiography is one of the best books I have ever read.

Once upon a time every president had his family tree done. My aunt worked in the national archives and became very interested in genealogy. Her grandmother was an Eisenhower.

His magnanimity in the surrender terms, was matched by MOH winner JL Chamberlin’s troops salute to the Rebs as they stacked arms for the last time. From such actions a lasting peace and brotherhood can be rebuilt… that was the failure of the Treaty of Versailles that ended WW1.

One of my favourite stories about Grant is the time when certain of his rivals went to Lincoln to complain that Grant was a drunkard. Lincoln asked them to find out what brand of whisky Grant drank so he could have a crate of it sent to all his other generals.

I cannot believe how infatuated that Americans are with a war that pitted their citizens against each other!
The South and its sympathizers did their best to build up Lee and the “Lost Cause” and dismiss and downplay Grant. I’ve never understood that, as someone who grew up in Michigan. The first time I stood in front of Grant’s portrait in the National Portrait Gallery in D.C., I teared up, feeling so sorry that we Americans have not given him the credit for saving the Union and fighting to end slavery, instead of Lee doing his best to destroy the Union and continue slavery in the Confederacy.

Grant’s Memorial on the National Mall, to the rear of the Capitol, is one of the most moving, yet under appreciated pieces in the Mall. By far one of the most complex, interesting, gritty, humane, and even flawed leaders. But his importance can’t be underestimated, especially coming on the heels of a truly vile Andrew Johnson.
