Charlestown, Nevis – August 18, 2014… September 19th is celebrated as the day of Independence for the Caribbean island of Nevis. At that time sports enthusiasts are expected to descend on the isle over the one week period from September 15th to September 22nd for three world class sporting events. Promoted by the Nevis Tourism Association (NTA) as ‘Nevis Race Week’, the 2014 competition includes a Horse Racing, a Running Festival and Motor Sports.
A load of excitement is in store when the Annual Dan Bartlette Memorial Horse Race takes place at The Indian Castle Race Track on September 16th, Nevis’ National Hero’s Day. Sponsored by the Nevis Turf and Jockey Club and named for the indomitable horse racing enthusiast Dan Bartlette, it is the signature horse racing event in Nevis for the year. The excitement of the Nevis Race Week continues when a selection of runners from all over the world looking for their next challenge will take part in the exciting 3 day Nevis Marathon and Running Festival. The festival is staged from September 18th to 20th. The marathon is presented as the main event along with a half marathon, 10k, 5k and kid’s race.
The Nevis Running Festival takes place on the most beautiful running course in the Caribbean. The marathon begins in the island’s capital, Charlestown on the Caribbean Sea side of Nevis and will go out and back along the sombrero shaped land mass, offering spectacular views along the way. Runners will pass through many of the island’s villages, where Nevisians will be lining the route to cheer on the participants. With Vervet monkeys and goats roaming freely on the island, along the route runners are guaranteed to encounter some of Nevis’ wildlife. On a course with a mix of steep hills and flat terrain, runners will be supported next to the track by water and feed stations which will be enhanced by local music and island delicacies.

The two day ‘Annual Independence Invasion Drag Race’ attracts racers from the neighboring islands of Antigua, St. Maarten, St Kitts among others and is staged at the St. James raceway, reportedly one of the finest drag racing facilities in the Caribbean. With plans to capitalize on the regional and international appeal of drag racing, the St. James Raceway has a top of line surface, international marking and international safety standards.
