St. Kitts and Nevis (WINN): Miss St. Kitts Yarayni Morton was named the 2014 Miss Caribbean Culture in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
“I’m really excited. This is such a fantastic feat for me. I’ve always been interested in pageantry. I tried it, and just the chance to come out on top is absolutely fantastic. I’m so excited,” she said, speaking to WINN FM from Nevis on Tuesday.
The 23-three year old Morton was the First runner up in the National Carnival Pageant last December. With the reigning Miss St. Kitts participating in – and winning – the Miss Jaycees International in Antigua last weekend, it fell to Miss Morton to represent St. Kitts in the Miss Caribbean Culture show hosted during Nevis Culturama Festival. There she competed with national queens from other territories, something she tells WINN FM made the win even sweeter.
“My team kept telling me Yarayni you’re doing good. Just keep the energy. Start with the energy from the beginning section even though it’s not judged and…that’s what I did!”
Miss Morton also copped top honours for the Interview Segment.
The First Runner Up in this year’s Miss Caribbean Culture Pageant was Miss Anguilla, Amethyst Davis. The Second Runner up was Dominica’s Francine Baron and the Third Runner Up was Miss Nevis, Jomelle Elliot.
Miss Dominica was the winner of the Swimsuit Appearance, Miss Nevis won the Evening Gown segment, and Miss Anguilla snagged the award for Best Performing Talent. Best Promotional Video went to Miss Dominica.
But what happens now that St. Kitts has two regional queens? WINN FM put that question to Morton on Tuesday.
“I’ve watched pageantry on the outside…and it was always something that I wanted to take a shot at. Now that I’ve been exposed to the inside realm of pageantry, I can honestly say that I’ve had my fill and I will not be competing for any further pageants,” she told WINN FM.
“I don’t have the discipline that it takes to complete over and over and over,” she said laughingly.
“I think that with this win, that’s the bang. That’s the top of things for me with pageantry. I’ve had a good run at it. I placed in both pageants and I think that you..stop when you’re on top.”
Miss Morton who works in Marketing says any career moves at this time would be lateral, into something like Public Relations. She hopes in the next year to year and half to start work on her Masters Degree.
She promises however, that she will still be on the road for carnival.
