There are different groups of cicadas that emerge every 13 and 17 years because those are prime-numbers so their lowest-common-multiple is 221 which means both groups are out at the same time less than once per two centuries which reduces the chances of a catastrophe (predators, weather, etc.) to the population as a whole, it maximize their chances of survival. Not a mystery at all. ¬_¬

Where I live they come every year. My kids collect the carcasses lol. Off of one tree they collected over 150. It’s an annual thing in a lot of southern states
